Question Magnaflow Mufflers Worn Out After Only A Year??????

HI!... Anyone else here wear out their MAGNAFLOW mufflers? I have a true duel set-up using 2 S/S MAGNAFLOW 2.5" 4X9 mufflers. For the last week or so when I let off the gas thet make a terrible popping noise like the old crappy cherry bombs from the 60/70's. I know MAGNAFLOW uses a straight through design with packed insulation around the center core. I'm figuring that the insulation packing is worn out or totally gone. The mufflers are only a bit over a year old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine made a popping noise until I blew a plug.

May have been the loose plug(s), or loose clamp(s), as it was all tightened up after the plug incident, and no more popping, just glub-glub-glub on deceleration.

Kinda miss the popping, thought it sounded cool

Check header gaskets and muffler clamps(if used).

I had my S/S, single Magnaflow, JDM c/b installed a little over 1 1/2 years(and 31,000 miles) ago. Still one of the best mods I bought...........................no 'problemos'

Neal

Have you made changes to your tune recently ??

My exhaust gurgled like that when I had one tune but it reduced quite a bit when I changed the tune. I was told it was due to high cruise timing.....

I didnt mind the gurgling - Reminded me of cars from my youth....

Cool

HI!... Well ther collector gaskets are not leaking and my entire exhaust system is S/S and all TIG welded together. No clamps at all. Checked the plugs and their o.k. It sounds like TOTAL *****!!!!!! I hate it so much I don't even want to drive the truck. It's embarrassing. I did go to the dyno about a week ago but they didn't touch my chip or tune it. Just went for A/F's. It was running rich with 48PSI fuel pressure at idle so they turned it down to 39PSI. That's all that was done. Thanks for the help.

A lean idle will cause poping on deceleration. Sounds like you need to take it back to your tuner and have him check it out. Even if the mufflers do eventually wear out it will be very gradually.

Cool

HI!... Well the tunes not the problem. According to the A/F ratio's, I was 14.7:1 to 15.0:1 at idle and 12.4:1 at WOT. Remember that this is in N/A form.

Cool

HI!... Yes I checked the entire exhaust system today at work. No cracks. I'm going to crank my fuel pressure back up and see what happens. If it still does it then I'm afraid I have a few baq 24LB injectors.

Neal - I said mine was affected by the timing not the fuel.

I have Long tubes single cats and single magnaflow and it started gurgling and popping with one specific chip I had - I reported the problem to the chip tuner and it was fixed...

the exhaust didnt change

Neal I have some extra 24 # injectors, had one go bad, to replace one was $80 or 8 for $209. if you need 1 or 2 i will give them to you and drop them in ups. my brother was laughing at me because I figured it out by starting the car up, taking 1" x 1/2" x 3 ft piece of wood and putting it up against the injector the other end next to my ear while the engine was running, the good one we ticking and vibrating the wood, the bad one had no sound at all.
( i replaced all of them with the new ones so the ones i have are used , hardley used but the car sat for a while and one stook open)
