TOO much for stock bottom end???????
TOO much for stock bottom end
Right now I am conservative with a 3# lower and the usual upgrades.
BUT winter is here and the time to mod is NOW.
My question is, would the following be too much on a stock lower?
JLP 6# pulley (adding this winter)
APTEN modified Eaton Blower (30rwhp) (adding this winter)
JLP Ram air intake and filter kit. (adding this winter)
superchip flip chip (street race)
Phenolic Spacer
Factory Tech Valve body
Deep trans pan
Lakewood Traction bars
Hoosier slicks
MAC Cat Back
NGK tr6 plugs.
E-Fan with CObra R water pump.
HOMEMADE power cooler (lines will be COLD going into the I/C) (adding this winter)
Boost Bypass, Oil seperator, Swanson kit.
OR should I stick with the 3# lower and the above parts.
I'm afraid if I put the 6# on there, the bottom end will let go.
Figure with the apten modificaiton and addition of a 6# pulley I'll be around 440rwhp. (somewhere around there)
(RIght now on street program with 3# lower I am at 391rwhp)
I've read a few times that 450rwhp is about the limit for stock bottom ends.
I DON'T WANT TO INVEST IN A BUILT LOWER YET.
BTW I have a '99. (don't know if the rods are better or not)
With the above parts what should I set the Shift RPM and CUT off RPM to maintain a safe condition?
With the 3#, it goes way into the red, sometimes 6000rpm's then shifts. (not certain how accurate the stock Tach is)
THOUGHTS, COMMENTS ARE WELCOME....
keep in mind i do not want to build the lower. IF you think a 6# with apten modification is close, I'll keep the 3#.

the vendor i use for all my stuff suggested that with my mods a 4#er would be enough, and that once you go to a 6#er, you're pushing it, especially with an aggressive (race) program on your chip. I'd go 4# and make sure you do the efan if you're going with the 6#er...less centrifical mass to rotate will loosen the pressure on the rods.....it's the same problem i'm going to have to deal with in the spring....when the nitrous bottle is loaded into the bed...
Plenty have been running 6 and even 8 lbs of extra pulley for years and tens of thousands of miles with no problems.
"It's all in the tune" Schitt I even juice mine on top of it
Truthfully though, I'd stick with 4lbs plus the other mods you listed. You should run easy mid to low 12's and you'd be much safer (never any grrnty's, it's all in the tune)
I've run numerous 12.7's + 8's with a simple filter-chip-4lb+T/B.
No Tranny, Suspension, Exhuast, or Cooling Mods.
Good Luck

One of the problems running a 6# or 8# pulley is that the intake temps can be very inconsistant, even though the ambient temps havent changed. A powercooler will help a lot, since it will help keep your intake temps more even. A conservative tune makes all the difference, but a 6# can put you closer to the edge and reduce your cushion of luck.
On the other hand, with the ported blower, the heat from the added boost will be marginally less, since the pressure delta will be less. I haven't seen any numbers on the pre-intercooler temps ported vs stock, but I'd wager that they will be somewhat less, more significantly as you move above the Eaton's range of efficiency.
If it were me, I'd stick with the 3#, since you know what to expect from it. This will remove one less variable to have to guess about if you run into problems. Once you've established your power gains from your other mods, you can find out if changing the blower drive ratio for YOUR combo makes more power.
