uh oh, strange metallic noise.... sal, anyone?

click here... the video is 2 megs. it i a metallic rattle. I have removed the supercharger belt to eliminate any of those components and it is still making the noise... It sounds high and front. Any ideas?

oh yeah, you'll need the absolute latest version of quicktime to play it.

the sound clip is about halfway down the page on page one...

Ouch, that doesn't sound good. I think in your thread, you said you removed the blower belt and it still does it? I'd suggest removing the engine belt as well, and seeing if it's still there (just for a minute or so, you'll have no water pump). If it goes away, start looking for things driven off the engine belt. Could be your A/C clutch (they sound tinny when they come apart), or anything else driven off the belt. If it still does it with both belts off, well that's not good, means it's in the motor. Might also want to check your converter nuts and bellhousing inspection plate.

thanks, sal! bing! i think you just hit it! I think I remember the person that sold the truck to me mention something about the a/c making a strange noise...

if I turn the A/C off, and it is the clutch, will it likely make the sound stop?

thanks!

Not always. When the clutch bushings go bad, the front ring becomes loose, and will randomly bounce into the spinning portion of the pulley. That sounds exactly like your noise.

I think you have hit it on the head.... Everything seems to be ok otherwise and the sound is random.

Thanks for your help Sal! Let's hope that is it. I'll take it over to the dealer, watch the temps closely just in case, but I think you diagnosed it right out of the gate.

To Sal (or anyone)... is this going to require a new compressor or is this just a new clutch?

Theoretically we are looking at a warranty repair, but I'm sure the ford dealership is going to tell me to shove it. It's about the only thing on there that is still stock, lol

thanks again.

Usually you just need to replace the 3 piece clutch assy. Most dealers stock them, as it's common and most compressors use the same setup. If your truck is still under warranty, I see no reason for them to deny the claim.

houston, we have a problem

Ken,
I've got a engine rattle my dealer is about to give up on. Did your AC clutch fix do the trick?

Is there a way I can download your video?

Much appreciated
