Angry Chip Reburns, Lower Temps and A/F's

Well, finally took the chip that I had waited on for six weeks for a reburn to the dyno. This chip had been sent back to the 'tuner' (and I'm using that term in the loosest possible fashion) for a reburn as my A/F's were previously hovering around a 12.5/1. Needless to say that was a little high for my taste, so I boxed up the chip and six pages of dyno graphs and printouts from the dyno so the 'tuner' doing the reburn could see power, torque and the A/F's in question. After waiting to get the chip and calling several times and getting the "Your chip is being burned next," "It's a 'custom' burn based on the dyno results," and "Jxx is handling this one himself since it's a 'custom' program" I finally got it back...six weeks to the day that it was sent back. The chip came back with the same program 'name' on it that it had been sent back with but I was assured that it was indeed a 'custom' burn and that the 'custom' burn was only based upon the program name on the chip.

So, dyno results today are as follows (mind you I always use the same dyno because a) I like consistency and b) it's free)...the truck is now down 7hp and 7 ft.-lbs. of torque and the A/F on the first pull was a stellar 13.5/1 across almost the entire rev range and on the second pull it was only a 14.5/1! Needless to say I'm fuggin' ecstatic with those results. "Oh, you wanted me to fatten the tune up...my bad, I cranked the fuel trims down." Six weeks and I get a crap burn that had I not dynoed it would have toasted my truck in short order. Fan-fuggin'-tastic! Now I know the A/F 'box' on the dyno was good as it had just been replaced. The only difference was that the pulls today took place in 71-degree weather versus 85-degree weather from the last time. My question is can a 15-degree difference in temps lean a truck out a full point? While I am guessing it can change the A/F's some I find it hard to believe that the crap tune that should have richened up a 12.5/1 A/F leaned out a full point or more because of weather.

So, having been down this road with this 'tuner' several times before, I have a strange feeling that he's going to get his chip back with a message to shove it up his azz and I'm going to go to someone who can actually tune a truck and do it in a timely manner.

Did you run without the chip while you waited? Have you dynoed "chipless"? If so, what were the AFRs? Is there any chance your fuel system somehow isn't keeping up with demand?

I'm not trying to defend Jxx. I've never been a big fan there. Hope you get better results from another tuner.

For some reason 6 pounds of boost over stock without any chip didn't seem like the wisest idea. I cannot imagine that at 415-420 horse the truck is having fuel issues (and the fuel filter was just changed), since most of the guys with KB's are pushing close to 500 before fuel issues arise.

Fuel Filter...maybe????

I have been through two in 7k miles. That 100 octane eats them bad boys up.

It may be worth a shot anyway. They are about 10 bucks and real easy to change. If ya haven't done it in awhile, it sure can't hurt.

OOPS...I just saw the part about the fuel filter. As Gilda used to say...Never Mind.
