Kenne Bell on stock block

going to be investing in a KB next month or so...just wondering how many people run an aftermarket blower on their stock bottom ends?? most people have told me i will be ok as long as i dont go to extreem with the boost..im at 14psi right now and my block is fine...adding a KB wont increase the chance of breaking anything will it? and if its a little unsafe..how good are the bottom end kits ive seen from some of the vendors?? ive seen some lower end packadges out ther for under $2,000 any info would be great guys... thanks!

....im hoping i will have enough to do both at the same time..that would be awesome..how much boost can be pushed with the built lower end??and how much can be pushed with a stock bottom end... with a KB....

My understanding is due to the efficiency of the KB it is a safer application especially regarding reduced heat etc.

I have a stock block with the KB and many other mods and believe me your tune has more to do than boost regarding the "safe" word. I run 16lbs of boost with my KB, I am producing 496 hp and 562 torque and so far so good. Both the KB - L community here and my tuner suggested I stay at 16lbs with the stock block, but some are pushing it further. Believe it or not, I have actually maxed my stock injectors and during my last tune my tuner said either reduce boost or invest in larger injectors to see mid 500's in hp, but again I don't want to push my luck.

From an efficiency point of view you will notice a considerable difference even if you stay at the 14lbs - it is that simple.

As far as the kits, the JLP's of the world appear to have the best track record, as in L's they can point to for reliability and performance, but that isn't to knock the other vendors. Sal at PSP puts a great kit together that I know of - and of course this is just my opinion - but I am interested in a build lower next year and I have be doing my research.

Regardless of your decision you will enjoy the KB. Good Luck!

D-Day

I'm also running a KB on a stock long block. I agree with Dan, in that the KB is a MUCH more efficient blower.

The trick to running a KB on a stock longblock is, first and foremost....THE TUNE! Secondly....Keep the boost levels below 16psi (especially in sub 50* temps)! Third....IMHO, it helps to have a good combination of "efficiency" mods...ie...Long Tubes, E-fan, Heat X-changer, etc...etc. These mods just help to further reduce stress on the reciprocating assembly.

I have most all of the bolt-on mods, and run the KB with a JLP tuned "flip" chip (w/ a low 5200rpm shiftpoint, and 16.5* of timing advance on the "hot" side), in an effort to keep the stock rods "in the dark". I'm not trying to set any World Land Speed records, I just enjoy having a truck that is faster than most, fun to drive, and reliable.

The big thing to keep in mind, is that the KB is capable of producing A LOT of HP, even at "lower" boost levels, and if not tuned correctly, AND driven conservatively....Will Destroy the stock internals....Quick, Fast, and In a Hurry!!! Hope this helps and Goodluck!

Later,
Rob

Post KB on stock long block.

Well I can probably just type one line and show my sig and let that do the talking but I won't. I currently am running the KB with 15-16PSI on my stock long block. JDM has the chip tuned for 14* of timing(same program street and strip). Dyno numbers are 514/596. Track numbers are 11.37 @ 118.82. Best time produced by a stock long block(so far). This is at full weight aside from Bograts and over 3/4 tank of fuel. You just can't argue with those numbers. JDM hit the nail on the head with my truck and I am happy. I also for one feel they have the BEST motor package available as of right now. You can't argue with 10+ trucks that are street driven in the 10's. There personal truck is the 3rd fastest and hasn't been on the road for over a year. It isn't always who is fastest that is the best. I like to the vehicle to go out there and lay down the number several times, not once. -Mat-

My $.02

K/B on stock block

Out in California,Frank (Red Bolt) has run 118-119 with a stock motor. His truck has around 75,000 miles on it too! If the tune is correct these trucks live for a long time under some very demanding drivers. He runs out of Swanson Performance who tunes almost all of the fast Lightnings in Southern California.
