xpipes, resonance, and location of the X...
I've spoken to a couple of exhaust system desingers about the X pipe, it's purpose, and resonance. Supposedly, the X pipe is designed to allow equalization across the two pipes to allow the pulses to best scavenge exhaust. the net result is more torque.
Fine, we all agree this is the basic concept.
Further, though, the x-pipe or (or any crossover pipe for that matter including hpipes) is designed to allow cross resonance in dual setups to "cancel out" via the crossover pipe...
According to both of them, I need to paint the exhaust pipe with a strip all the way up to the header. The point which is the hottest will bubble up first and is the hottest area. The hottest area is where the X pipe will actually do the most good in terms of reducing resonance and increasing torque via pulse equalization.
Has anyone run this little experiment with the full JDM system? The JDM system I have has the X pipe directly connected to the mufflers (in front).
that may be the hottest spot, but both guys I talked to said the optimal X location is always going to end up somwhere as close to the headers as possible...
any information as to where you put your X would be most appreciated...
thx!

I'm kinda in the same boat, except I'm at a stage where I'm trying to locate the x-pipe in the best location for my truck. I currently have no x-pipe on my truck. And I've been trying to get information about the x-pipe. I do not want to waste my money if it does not preform a HP gain.
My theory is if I locate it before the muffler and I run two seprate mufflers it would serve well. But if I run a Dual in and a Dual out style muffler then the muffler would serve as the x-pipe " Right".
So I either spend more money to get two mufflers and a x-pipe or just buy a dual in and dual out style muffler and save some money.
What kind of difference did you notice with the x-pipe before the muffler compared to no x-pipe ?

I can say this that the over the counter x pipe systems are just that. There is no way you can have the x put in the proper place when you are running one pipe over to the other and have the paint bubble on both at the same part. The same LENGTH maybe but not the same point. You have one pipe easily 2 feet longer than the other so the length[distance] would be about the same from each collector.I think mine is about as close to being opt than any other out there.Exhaust length is withing 1 inch from side to side.the "X" is farther back than I like but put there because of service issues as well as heat.It took me 2 DAYS to get it that close and over 1000.00 bucks for the cats pipes and X pipe plus mufflers. It is all custom if you add for the headers and the mods I did to them and my labor I am into it more than 2700.00.This is all for out trucks where the 'last bit' helps. Now the cars can have a more opt placement of the piping.Stan

I rode in this thing, and all I can say is WOW. He floored it going into a turn next to the DYNO shop, and it just hooked to the pavement. It sounds like a friggin INDY car too!

Thanks, Ruslow...
I guess I should have made the point that I am interested in the most HP, yes, but I am MORE interested in how much resonance can be eliminated via a well placed X pipe...
One side is going to be longer than the other, yes... I'll have to assume that finding the hot spot on each side and then "splitting the difference" and placing the X right there would be optimal. I don't know where that is, but I assume it will be way forward of the actual mufflers...
Do you have an underside pic of your exhaust?

Markus.... Sorry I missed your question the first time. I didn't notice a before/after x pipe because I dont' have the data. I am trying to make sure my X is in the optimal position. It certainly can't make LESS hp and MORE noise than the position it is in now as there is no way it is optimal.
As far as an X pipe in the muffler, this is a convenience thing. Still better than no X at all, but that is way too far downstream for the X. You could still get a single muffler with 2 straight through pipes and put an X in the optimal position if you don't want to buy two cans...

I HAD a pic of it but the pics are not in the gallery,so as of now no.I do know that the system on my truck works.when I had a collector leak it lost a huge amount of power and thought I had a miss and chased that theory for 30 mins.Gave up on that and decided to fix the leak[new about it first]and rethink on finding the miss afterwards. But as soon as I fixed the leak the power was back.
As for resonance I run supertraps and have no resonance at all at any speed.Just a sound all by itself.Stan

Thinking out loud here…
If you have two unequal length pipes and the heat “spots” are not ideal for an X pipe then what about sort of an H pipe that joins the two “hot spots”?
With the way the fuel tank is positioned, there aren’t many choices.
