Question Plugs...

I plan on getting my truck dynoed this weekend to check the A/F ratio. I got a little detonation last time I was at the track, and instantly got off the accelerator. All of the talk about blowing motors has me spooked. Anyway, I have a 4lb pulley, and a flip chip...

My question is...where should my A/F Ratio be? I want to keep it safe, but still have as much power as I can squeeze out of it.

Another question...I haven't had a chance to change my plugs yet, so I've been running on the stock ones for a while (I know, not very smart), but could the plugs be causing the detonation? If I change the plugs will it help the problem?

And finally, I have a set of NGK TR6's, should I change the plugs before I get it dynoed or does it really have an affect on the ratio?

Thanks for any help received

As a new L owner, six months ago - I asked the same question and 100's of L owners told me if I was going to do anything in the way of mods as it relates to our s/c then yes - first order is change to colder plugs. Everyone has their own opinion on plugs and basically you need to find one that works for you. I personally have tried the AR 93's, Denso IT 22's and my last attempt with the Beru S1K's sold me.

a/f is very important and that too was a learning experience.

One fellow L owner put it this way, simple is best in my book

14's hot/lean, safe is not found in this number
13's still flirting with lean
12's some what safe
11's safe

Take it for what it's worth. In my tune, I come out of the gate in the low 15's, but I drop immediately to the 12's and level at 12.1 for the higher rpm's. The key is to get safe for the high rpm ranges (in my opinion).

If you have detonation I would talk to your tuner before you get to the dyno! And just from a safety point of view I personally would change the plugs, period.

Hope it works out!

D-Day

"I want to keep it safe, but still have as much power as I can squeeze out of it. "

You won't know the a/f until you dyno. Looowww 12's to high 11's should be what you're asking for.

Yes, I would change out the plugs even though my 01 L got into the high 12s(ET) with the OEM plugs and a 3 lber pulley +++.

I believe also that my 160 degree 'stat keeps my engine safer--detonation-wise.

Changing the thermostat? I think that's the first I've heard of that helping detonation... If that's the case, I'll have to do that asap! Thanks!

Yes, change the plugs before the dyno, colder plugs are less likely to detonate.
