Cool Add Another To The Blown Plug Family

Plug blew last night going about 15 mph. The truck is a stock, 2000#351, 40,000 miles, Never raced. The bottom of the plug looks like it's been hit by a hammer, totally bent in with all the ceramic missing. The question I have is what's my chances of having to get a new motor? I don't like the idea that some of the plug might have fallen into the cylinder scratching it. Will a dealer even be able to check for that type of damage? Looking through past posts it seems like most just get a new head, this is fine but how do they know their isnt more internal damage?

If the bottom of the plug is bent and the ceramic is missing that means the piston hit the spark plug. The only thing I can think of is overrevving the motor which means racing. Not sure what to tell you.

I thought i had spit a plug the night before last but it ended up being the idler pulley for the S/C had froze up and bent so the belt had thrown off and hit the fan.

All of the Ford Mod motors blow plugs. The 4.6, 5.4 and the V10 all do it. It's not just the Lightnings. The best thing you can do is check your plugs to make sure that they are tight. The first time is a pain and can be done it a couple hours.

chicken is obvious when you blow a plug (what's it sound like)...my truck is brand new (03), and everyone that has these problems (rods, plugs, etc) seem to have 00 or 01's...but i'm still wearing about WOT...maybe i'm just a *******

ive never heard of a 4.6 or a v10 blow a plug? Where did you hear that?

03's have revised heads, your less likely to throw a plug.

Ticking sounds and exhausts leak noises are signs you may have a plug loose. After you throw a plug you will have poor idle, and poort engine performance, similar to a misfire

You should be good with the blowing plug thing. Ford added more threads to the 03 heads. I would check them just to be sure they are tight. Ford supposedly has fixed many things on the truck.

2002 L. I blew #7 at 28,000 miles they gave me a new motor! Not sure why, but I believe they may have also detected piston slap issue's. Changing out the whole motor isn't much more than just doing the heads in both time and money. Pearson Ford San Diego treated me right. You will hear a ticking sound that your not sure of, it's blow by around the loose plug. Also there will be not doubt when it blows, mine blew at 65mph and destroyed the coil pack it was just hanging there. I have heard of very few people getting new motors but if you go in with the right attitude, even with 40,000 miles you might get the updated heads at least. I have no mods, if you do, your TOAST!

if something goes, i'll be sure to have it towed to my house where i will promptly re-intstall everything stock and even switch out the computer so they can't check the prongs....hopefully i won't ever have to though

there is no way for the piston to hit the spark plug. when the spark plug backs out, it goes AWAY from the piston, not towards it. the electode is bent because after the plug backs out, the coil's rubber boot is still holding the plug down in the hole. so every time the combustion process occurs, the spark plug bounces around in the bottom of it's hole in the cylinder head and beats itself to death. at least untill the coil's plastic bolt down tab breaks and the whole thing launches itself onto the valve cover!

later,
chris
