Is there anything wrong with driving around with over drive off?

I don't do a lot of highway driving but I like how the truck drives better with od off around town. I notice the rpms are higher in 3rd rather than in 4th so the truck is a lot more throttle responsive in 3rd I can tell. I know I am going to go through more gas. Other than that, is there any harm being done to the transmission or the motor reving that high? At 3,000-4,000 vs 2,000 where it is with od off? Can I cause any harm to the blower with the pulleys I'm running? Just thought I'd ask.
thanks, Shane

I drive around with my OD off constantly... usually stays between 2000-3000 rpm around town. I figure that has to be better than the truck repeatedly downshifting to 3rd or luggin it down in 4th... plus it sounds a lot better! I just turn the OD on when I hit the freeway.

Yeah I love how it sounds in 3rd. The exhaust rumbles. I just worry about the rpm's being up where they are. Is that any more stress on the internals in the motor? (Even if you aren't in the boost) thanks, Shane

You have to love the rumble of the JDM silver bullet catback with the overdrive off cruising around town at 45. I am hardly ever in overdrive around town.

it just causes more wear and tear on the motor, being that it runs more revolutions

My truck has to be doing over 65mph for it to be at 3000 rpm with the O/D off. At least I think thats right So if oyu guys see 3000-4000 rpm you guys cruise very fast in the city

I will double check this tomorrow but I am fairly sure that with the over drive off I am at 3000 rpm when doing about 70 mph.

that's not bad I was just wondering if it was bad for the truck if you got up there in the revs...

I wouldnt bother turning it off unless you're not going to exceed 35-40 mph...

Actually I thought he said just let the truck decide what gear it wants to be in. Not that it was bad or good.

I think I recall him saying he wishes they put that O/D off button inside the engine compartment in a safe or something.

I thought this was in reference to people using od to downshift. For engine wear, im sure its no different than someone with a stick using 3rd more than 4th, maybe causes a tad mor engine wear, but we are talking about such a miniscule amount i wouldnt be concerned with it. For the tranny i dont know, ask gregg.

I heard that to. If that was the case of o/d wasn't an option would it just be a normal 4 speed? It couldnt be just a 3 speed.
I know in the 1/4 it isnt an issue cause od doesnt come in till like 130... I'm just talking about driving around town
with it off, that's ok right?

O/D just means over drive, meaning the gear ratio is 1:1 or greater, or . .. is it greater than 1:1 something like that. There are things like overdrive bands etc etc that make this but i don't think that is the case with this particular transmission, i think its just 4th gear on or off.

So for engine wear its fine, you just gotta find out about transmission problems, i personally think it will be fine, no shifting is better than shifting, but im thinking the torque converter might take additional wear but i just can't tell.

Maybe Gregg can chime in with his opinion... I mess with my OD button quite a bit... lol
