remove your brake calipers, rotors, rear end cover plate, rotate your diff till you see a small headed bolt 8 or 10mm remove it completly its around 3in long, then push the large steel pin that that bolt was threaded into till its completly out, have someone else push in on the outside of the axle while you take a screw driver and push out the C-Clips once you get those out you can just pull them out.

F150 9.75 Axle Shaft
Removal

WARNING: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the RH kick panel area. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations.
Raise and support the vehicle.

Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
Remove the differential housing cover (4033).
Drain the lubricant. For additional information, refer to Differential Housing Cover in this section.
Remove the brake calipers and discs.
Remove the differential pinion shaft (4211).
Remove and discard the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
Remove the differential pinion shaft.

CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves.
Remove the U-washers (4N237).

Push the axle shafts (4234) inboard.
Remove the U-washers.

CAUTION: Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal (1177).
Remove the two axle shafts.

Installation

Lubricate the lip of the wheel bearing oil seal.
Use Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B.

CAUTION: Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal.
Install the two axle shafts.

CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the U-washer grooves.
Install the U-washers.

Position the two U-washers on the button ends of the axle shafts.
Pull the axle shafts outward.

NOTE: If a new pinion shaft lock bolt is unavailable, coat the threads with Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specifications WSK-M2G351-A5 prior to installation.
Install the differential pinion shaft.

Align the hole in the differential pinion shaft with the case lock bolt hole.
Install a new differential pinion shaft lock bolt.

Install the brake discs.
Install the differential housing cover and fill the rear axle housing (4010) with the correct amount of specified lubricant.
Install the tire and wheel assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .

Thanks
Chris,
I'm really sorry, your e-mail totally slipped my mind. I meant to get back to you with some pics from the shop manual. in any event it looks like some of the other guys have already given you the info you need. here is a pic of what you need to get at:

once you get the cover off, just remove that pinion shaft bolt, then slide the pinion shaft out, then you can push the two axles towards each other and remove the C-clip from the end of each. once the clips are removed you can just pull the axle shafts out of each side. good luck.

later,
chris

Is the diff going to come out or do I even need to worry about that? All I really need is to remove the axles in order to get the brake caliper mounts off the tubes.

Chris, just make sure you do NOT, under any circumstance, rotate the axles or drive shaft once you've taken the cross pin out of the diff and you will be fine. Like they said, pull over, rotate diff til yuo can remove the cross pin retaining bolt, remove the bolt and cross pin, push axles in, remove C-lips, pull axles out.

Sal,

I assume I should somehow mark the axles so they go back in the same or just make sure I do not rotate the diff.

I am now going in…

Just make sure you don't rotate anything with the cross pin out, or the spider gears will move and it will be a BITCH to get the pin back in.

no, the differential isn't going to go anywhere unless you remove the four bolts holding the caps in place (look like main bearing caps on an engine)

and like sal was saying, don't turn the axle shafts as you remove or install them. you don't have to worry about lining the axle back up into the differential side gear spline for spline or anything like that, that's not the problem. but the spider gears and side gears can move around once you remove the pinion shaft and the axle shafts. they can move in different amounts and/or different directions. if that were to happen, you'd have to re-align everything (which can be a pain) because the pinion shaft actually goes through the center of the spider gears.

good luck, it's not that hard.

later,
chris

Well I have the axles out and I was surprised that one is shorter than the other.

I put the pin back in without the axles in place to keep everything aligned until I am finished. I assume this will keep me out of trouble.

Thanks guys for all the help and if you think of anything else please let me know.

I didn't put the pinion back in and the gears moved on me. How do I get them realigned to get the pin back in
