Question Water temp readings?

I tapped into the following line as shown in this pic:

I actually set my up EXACTLY the same way...

Also installed a 160* stat at the same time.

My questions are:
* - What kind of temps is your Autometer gauge showing when the truck is fully warmed up?

My gauge doesnt start reading for some time, until cruising around after about 5 mins or so, then only shows about 148-152* crusing at 80mph in 70-80 degree weather. Checked the readings at the same time from the dash cluster hack, and showed 80-82*C (or about 180*F). Why such a huge difference? Is my gauge bad, or is that line THAT much cooler than wherever the factory gauge is reading from.

and..

* - Where exactly does the temperature reading come from on the dash (odometer hack)...?

The hottest I've seen on the Autometer is 160 - 162*F, when I was running at about 80mph in OD, with 90*F ambient temperatures.

Thanks in advance,
-Jeff

One of the heater hoses has a restrictor orifice in it, and from the looks of that picture, it seems the temp sender is tapped into that restricted line (see the "lump" in the line right after the tee?). That could be your problem.

hmm... didn't notice a lump in mine. That was a pic of Neal's install from his truck (didnt take one of mine).

I'll look into that after work, though.

Where's the computer read the coolant temp, though? Does 81-82*C with a 160 stat sound about right? (when cruising around at 80mph)

81/82*C sound about right for a 160 degree thermostat while cruising fast when it is hot outside.

If you want it to run just a touch cooler...... take the 160 degree thermostat out and drill 3 - 3/16 holes around the perimeter of it's housing and then reinstall it. This will give the system more total flow capability. (More flow always results in lower temps) This modification should drop you cruising temp to around 75*C, and your around town temp to 78*C. You will also notice the temp will be more stable because the flow is not totally dependent on the opening and closing of the thermostat.

This is more of a nice little summertime modification, because in the winter if it's really really cold outside.......... it will take a long time for the system to come up to full operating temperature.
