IMHO

dont mess with them.

What do they do?

Throw lean codes, that's what.

Just because the Check Engine light doesn't illuminate does NOT mean the codes aren't there.

I have a breather cap and I don't have lean codes. I keep a Hellion attached at all times, no pending codes either.

Your question has many different answers. There are SO many different opinions on this subject.

The reason people started using the breather is to cut down on the amount of oil entering the intake manifold.

If you don't mind your intercooler being caked with oil, then you don't need one.

The only 100% effective way to get rid of the oil problem is to cap off the PCV system and vent the valve covers with breathers.

However..... most people prefer having at least a partially functional PCV system..... so that is the purpose of using breathers or different PCV valves, or oil separaters .....etc.

BTW, PCV valve part # EV98 installed in place of your original will solve at least 50% of the oil in the intake problem. That is probably good enough for most folks.

EV-98-B PCV valve. Install it in place of the original on passenger side.

This is a one way valve. It closes while under boost. This prevents boost from lower intake adding to the crankcase pressure that is already there from ring blowby, thus resulting in less oil being sucked up though the tube on the driver side and into the rubber intake boot just in front of the throttle body.
This valve will take care of alot of the oil in the intake problem.

The stock PCV valve flows both ways..... why? I don't think anyone knows that answer.

BY the way...... there is really no way you can have a fully functioning PCV system and NOT have some oil find it's way into the intake system.

Some people swear by the Oil separaters, but really.... who wants to open up the hood every 300 miles or so and drain it ?
