White/Gray Smoke
White/Gray Smoke
I have an 01 and noticed yesterday that when I rev the motor while in park that white/Gray smoke comes out of the exhaust. When driving I notice the same when I step hard on the gas. I have not noticed it before and would not have noticed driving unless it was dark and I looked in the side view mirror while passing, the other cars headlights made it very noticable.
Its embarrasing to see a new L blowing smoke.
Any ideas on what might cause this?
Im thinking maybe a leaking head gasket. But know that there have been recalls on the blowers on some 00 L's.
luckly Im still under warranty.
Thanks for any help.

I asked the same question a while back, and the consensus was that it is nothing to worry about.

embarrasing to see a new L blowing smoke yes but the dealer is no help unless its a ring problem.....if not you can
check for oil in the intake plenum which is common for 99-02 lightnings. Pull the rubber hose off the back of the intake plenum on the passenger side and see if there is oil residue.
Its the line from your PCV...... if you have oil there you can install a oil separator .... or a (03 cobra PCV you will need to mod to make fit) and put a crank case breather in place of your oil cap. I have an 03 cobra PCV and a oil separator but I have not put a breather cap on yet. Different combinations of things seem to work for different trucks. Some here plug the line to the plenum. Several tuners have recommended to me over the phone not to do this.
Do not plug any part of your closed loop PCV system. Now installing the breather cap will allow a little unmetered air into your intake but the slight lean condition will only be at idle and when the loop closes its adjusted for by the PCM......you can run a breather cap safely and this will reduce your oil in the intake system greatly.

Nearly all L's smoke a little at mid to WOT throttle.
Some of it is unburned combustion materials. Some is from the oil in the intake via the PCV.
Nothing to worry about as far as I have heard.

Red 92, you say that it occurs in 99-02 Lightnings. Has the pcv valve been upgraded for 03 in which case I don't need to periodically check my intake?
Thanks,
