Question about boost dump/bypass...

Does the boost dump/bypass 'valve' operate in an on-off mode, or is it variable in operation? Just curious...

It's contolled by the amount of vacume the motor produces. At idle's there's quite a bit of vacume which will open it up and dump excess air. At WOT, there is very little vacume which keep it closed allowing the boost to go into the motor, untill you let off and there is vacume again and dumps the boost.

It's more or less on and off and is only activated as a fail safe under certain conditions that could be harmful to the engine. So there isn't much of a chance it will open at idle.

And it will still open under full throttle. I've had it dump at full throttle a few times at the track and there was no doubt what it was.

Even though it is vacuum operated, the actual signal to dump is an electronic signal from the computer. The most common (not necessarily the best) way of disabling it is to unplug the solenoid that actuates it.
