What sub do you folks recommend?

Hey I was thinking of building my own box (I need a project) and was looking for a recommendation of what sub to use. I am looking to do a single 10". Basically I just what to improve the sound somewhat. I am not looking for anything more than that.

Yesterday I was checking out some JL subs at Goodguys, but I really don't know which one is better. The sales dude was also pushing the JL amps too. Thoughts?

go with some Eclipse subs... you will NOT be disapointed. Their 8s sound like 12's and so on... I have a set of their 1000 watt 12s, they are just plain crazy, they are a little pricey though

JL makes excellent subs and amps. The 10W3v2 is a very good performer for the price and the 10W6v2 is excellent but a bit pricey. Other good subs for a reasonable price are the Alpine Type R and the Infinity Perfects. These can be had from reputable sellers on Ebay for about $125.00 to $135.00 including shipping, but probably no warranty. Another excellent deal on subs can be found on Sound Domain. You can get a Phoenix Gold Elite that has been renewed from the factory for $80.00 plus shipping, and it has a full factory warranty. I just ordered one and it will be here today. Good luck with your choice.

I just ordered a box + sub from proboxrocks.com. This box is brand new and not pictured on their website yet. It is specifically made for regular cab f150's. It includes 1 10" in a large vented enclosure. They also make a couple sealed boxes for the F-150 but the seat doesn't go all the way back with those boxes.

I was planning on doing 2 JL 10w3v2's and in fact I had bought the JL's already. The proboxrocks guys are going to refund my money if I don't like this box, so I'm going to give it a try. It should arrive tomorrow.

I have a thunderform and I blew the 2 10" speakers which came with it. I'm thinking about that proboxrocks.com box for two 12's. JUst how much space will I lose and does anyone know if it will fit with an expedition center console? Also, my amp is 250 wattsx1 into a 4 ohm load. What kind of 12" subs should I get? Or should I stick with 10" ones?

For the serious audiophile the JL Audio W7 is the best you can get at this time.

Their box for the 12's is 10.5" at the bottom and 8" at the top (14" tall). So you can go outside and do the measurements. For my seating taste with the back where I like it, I was loosing 2 "clicks" on the seat for the manual passenger seat(same for the drivers seat). If that is acceptable to you, go for it..

I'd go with 2 quailty subs (JL 12w3v2's, Alpine R's, etc) that don't have crazy mounting depth requirements. Your amp is really underpowered to play any of those subs near their potential.

Good luck making one fit in a regular cab F-150 though. Only the 8w7 has a hope of fitting without losing a lot of leg room or building the box in the bed and porting it through.

For practical purposes, the w3v2 line is the best bet for our trucks.

a ported 10L7 does very nicely, I went this route and didn't lose any leg room at all.

Go talk to Doug S. at the Magnolia audio video in Lynnwood. He knows my truck well and can hook you up. Tell him Kevin sent you. Check out his Navigator whall you are there one of the cooler systems I have seen. About 12k plus into it.

Thanks for the reply. I really like Magnolia and Definitive down the street, unfortunately my wife has banned me from both, (something about a big screen, nine speakers plus a whole lot of other stuff). But really I just want a small sub with not a whole lot of expense since I tend to trade vehicles often. I would have even been satisfied with a factory Mach system if it was offered.
