Street Traction?

...is there such a thing? Ever since the temps have dropped into the 50's I can't hook on the street. I'm hardley modded and still have problems. I try rolling into a WOT but if it's in 1st gear then I smoke the tires. Anything I can do for better traction on the street? Will traction bars help at all?
