HELP! (Window Tint Removal)

Gang:

Help a brotha out!

I have a piece of junkyard glass (passenger side window) with an aftermarket tint job. I need to strip off the tint so I can use the glass in the 'Bolt.

How do I remove the film? It appears to be a pretty good job - stuck down but good. I didn't make much headway picking at it with my fingernail.

Any help is much appreciated. Is the window glass saftey coated like the windshield (plastic film on the inside) or just tempered (glass on the inside)? I can tell you that acetone on the inside of the windshield is a BIG NO-NO. How about on the door window?

This Just In...

Acetone does not harm the side (door) windows on either side of the glass. Cleans it quite nicely.

Not sure if this is relevant regarding tint removal.

i thought you used a razor blade to start it and just peeled it off. Maybe hot water would help? I would call a local tint places and just ask them, i bet they do it all the time.

Pep boys or any where that sells window tint should sell "Window tint remover spray". It is kind of a gel liquid glue remover that you spray on the tint. You leave it in the sun for about 30 minutes covered by a plastic bag.

After 30 min, the tint glue is softened to the point where you can peel it off (slowly!). Be very patient pulling the film off, because if you go too quick, the glue sticks to the window and is a pain to remove.

Windex and a razor blade also work great - window tint remover spray is nothing more than cheap window cleaner with ammonia in it (read: Windex).

here is a good and easy way.

1. get a spary bottle of water, windex, anything with water base.
2. get a black plastic trash bag.
3. cut the tash bag into a good size piece.
4. spray the window down (spray the wateror solution onto the tint side of the glass)
5. get the glass so wet that the water holds the black bag to the glass.
6. make sure car/ glass is in the sun.
7. let it sit for 15-45min. (for bright/hot days it will take 15-20 min. but longer on darker/colder days)
8. get a corner and pull off the tint all that will be left is the glue and thats nothing some windex wont take care of.
9. repeat. the glue will set agian and you will have to redo it but you should be able to get most of what you covered with the black bag.

did my back 3 windows on the 94 mustang last summer and it took one day that was about 45 min. of actual work taking off the tint. and 4 hours with the setup and wait.

Either use the previously mentioned acetone or use ammonia. Ammonia is commonly found in Windex and other glass cleaners, and thus the reason they tell you not to use it on tinted windows.

At the tint shop I used to work at years ago all we did was peel as much of the tint off as possible, use straight ammonia to spray down the glue then a razor blade to scrape the glue off. If it is a side window you can have all the tint and glue stripped in about 10-15 minutes. The glue comes off real easy with the straight ammonia. I like the idea of the black plastic bag cause that caters to my lazy side.
