What causes our beloved blower whine?

I've been wondering where the whine comes from in our blowers...is it the gears under load, the airflow, the rotors themselves, or a combination of it all? I searched, but no matches...

I could be misinformed but i've always been told it was due to the rotors and air flow

It's the magic pixie dust that Eaton stole from Tinkerbelle, and sprinkled on the blowers when they were put together. How else could these pigs fly?

But it's really a mix between the air flow and alittle gear noise im sure.

Yeah I've also been very curious about this as well. I personally think its probably gears. Since roots and twin screws manipulate air differently i would think the noise would be different if air was causing it, but it sounds bout the same to me. On the other end, have you ever heard an alternator with a bad bearing? High rev it and itll sound just like an s/c just quieter.

Spray a computer fan with a can of air... you'll get a whirrrr sound. I always thought it was the same basic thing.

i think its a high frequency of pulses caused by the rotors pushing air into the intake. if it were gears then why would have eaton put those little sound deadening holes in the bottom of the case?

This doesn't apply to our superchargers but on the big boys 8-71's with the cogged belts the air getting squished out between the teeth of the pulley and the belt makes a whistle noise. my whipple on my chevy makes same whine as the KB whatever cause it, i like it

could it not be harmonic vibartions? just a thought, but if you spin anything fast enough itll vibrate and emite a certain frequency. (someone correct me if im wrong).

What we hear is due to the internal compression. The air exiting the supercharger exhaust "pops". This can lead to a whine noise, whistle, or scream that has to be tolerated or dealt with using noise suppression techniques (i.e. the holes in our case).

I can't get enough of it myself.

Yes I did find a way to increase the blower wine, I added an 11.5" crank pulley and 26 lb of boost baby!
