Extra keys

Well the other day i needed to use the spare key on my L. i got out the spare key and went to the truck. I cliked the keyless entry button and the doors open so i didnt think anything was wrong. I put the key in the ignition and then it wouldnt turn. To make a long story short the ford place when i bought the L new 2 years ago must have not given me the right key when they gave me the spare. So i went to the LOCAL NON SVT dealership today to see about getting a spare key cut. They said it would take them an hour to make the key and it would be 75 dollars for the key. So i told them i might be back tommorow. Should i let them have my truck for an hour to make a spare key? If i do should i take my chip out so if they put it on the scanner it wont fry the PCM? When I was leaving the service department i hear a salesman reving up this 02 True blue L for a customer that is on the used car side. To top it off it had straight pipes and sounded like death taking a *****. Long post but need some answers.

John

Go to the original dealership.

If it was their mistake you should be able to get a new one for free.

A new "PATS" key was 26 bucks 7 years ago when they first came out. Before I spent that kind of money, I would at least call your original dealer and see if you can swap by mail. They may be able to ID the key you do have as one of thiers. A phone call can't hurt at this point!

The dealership that I bought my L from (Jacky Jones Ford in Cleveand, GA) quoted my wife $15 for a spare key for her Focus (yes it was a key with the chip inside it).

Now the local non-SVT dealership that she bought her car from quoted $85 for a new key.
