F150online test Lightning
F150online test Lightning
I've been reading months and months worth of emails regarding all of the mods and the subsequent wars about which is better and for what reasons, but the bottom line is that not many of us have the means to try multiple setups on our trucks to find out which ones are really better. All that happens is that each L owner likes their own set up because they havent had a chance to actually compare three or four items on the same truck-you know, its the "I like my Bassani" or "I like my magnaflow" because thats what they have. This brings me to my idea-F150online should buy an L and test the shi+ out of it with all of the different options out there. You guys have more pull than anyone else to get the parts and conduct the tests. Maybe each month you could tackle a different issue/performance upgrade and post the results and at the same time have an opportunity to promote the site if you choose to travel to races, shows and other events etc etc. What do the other members think? This may not be feasible, but with as many hits as this site creates, and the popularity of the F-150 the market is definitely there....
The other problem is that every modification makes compromises. A full exhaust might make more power, but would be too loud for 60% of the owners, and too quiet for 20% of the owners. A new valve body would tighten up shifts, but it will now shift too hard for 40% of the owners, and too soft for 40%. All mods are judged relatively, so there's not many comparisons to make at all.
Some people want the loudest they can get, some people want the fastest, and others want a tame truck that can tear up the on-ramps on occasion. I just don't think you can have a comprehensive test that will cover all the bases and be of use to everyone.

I.E. If you just install new catalytic converters, give results in:
"The sound output was much deeper at startup. There is now a noticable drone at highway speeds of 50-75mph. At WOT, the sound is just about as loud as the supercharger screaming, with a raspy-roar very similar to that of a Nascar truck"
..etc. I'd be interested in reading those types of posts...more than "It sounds GREAT!"...
...and what advantage is it to the guys who run this site? It's not like they are making tons of money advertising like the mags (Like MM&FF) do. If they get 100 more new accounts this month, since there is no subscription being charged, there is no advantage.
The only thing it can do is **** off a supporting vender who came up short in a test with a part. Maybe they used to sell a lot of a part, but when tested in a certain combination it gained 4 hp instead of the advertised 20 hp in the "f150online official test truck"...now they only sell 5 per week instead of 20. Did that make sense?

good point and a noble idea... however,
Who will be the judge as to what is 'best?'
Each of us use our truck for different purposes and have varying goals thereby affecting the end result in mod selection.
For example:
Must be able to tow and haul vs. frame scraper vs. drag vehicle vs. corner carver vs. daily driver or a combination of some/all the above.
Each vendor has their own ideas and how it relates to the above setups.
It gets complicated and (unfortunately) political real quick.
Noble thought nonetheless.
