project: rotors

What a night! I started at 7 (after a 10 hour day at work) and I just now I got inside. I got new rotors yesterday from Napa. They aren't anything fancy they are just replacement front rotors and they were $75 a piece. I picked them up Friday, but didn’t have time to install them till today.
I jacked up the front end and removed both my front tires.
Then I removed the two bolts holding the caliper to the rotor and I took the calipers off. Then I took off the cap over the pin and the bolt that holds the rotor on.
I removed the old rotor and was ready to put the new one on. I lubed up the new bearings and the new rotor. I put it on and it sat on there ok.
I had a hard time putting the caliper back on the rotor now. So I used a c clamp and compressed the pads a little more. (But it wasn’t that) It was the back spacing in the rotor. Even with no pads, it wouldn’t fit in the back where you put the bolts in the caliper... (Follow??) So I had to remove the cap again, and the pin, and the bolt that holds the rotor in place, and undo the bolt a few threads, and pull the rotor towards me a little, (further away from the motor) But it was still tight. So I tightened it down again, and it fit the 2nd time around. The rotor rotated freely and cleared the pads ok. And I got both the bolts in... So I was all done.
And I put the tires back on but the lugs weren't going on. (The tires sat in each stud) but each lug didn’t catch any of the threads...
So I had to reverse the whole process and put the stock rotors back on! (I wasn’t at my house and I was taking up someone’s spot in the garage) I think I was given the wrong rotors.
The backspacing was off a little I think. And the stock lug nuts didn’t fit on after the install. (I now know I should check that out b4 anything) It would have saved me 4 hours worth of work. Live and learn!
I am getting pretty good at the whole process of packing the bearing and swapping out these rotors. I just need to find the right rotors. Do you know of anywhere I can order them from online who is more familiar with our truck? Or will send me the right ones? I can return the ones from Napa. I can't wait to go in there! I don’t know if I want cross drilled and slotted ones, but I'd like to know what's out there. Any advice on the subject, I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks for your time, Shane

I get all of my parts from NAPA because of a discount. I've found that unless I bring in the part number from www.napaonline.com they tend to give me the wrong parts. NAPA Online only shows one front rotor for the 2000 Lightning: P/N: UBP86984 @ $109.00. Is that what they gave you?

I have NAPA United rotors on my truck. They're not performance rotors, but they seem to be the same quality as the OEM rotors and cost around $100.00 less for the pair.

I purchased my last set of front rotors from tire rack. I think they were $90-$100 each.

How about Tire Rack?

They are based in South Bend, IN and have a warehouse in Indy.

You should get them the next day with ground shipping.

OEM fitment made by Brembo

Note: (Front) Plain vented rotor for NASCAR & Lightning models with 14mm studs. $81.00 each

PowerSlot Rotors

Front Left fitment
Note: (Front Left) Slotted vented rotor Has 14mm studs
Price: $177.00 (each)
Estimated Availability: In Stock

Front Right fitment
Note: (Front Right) Slotted vented rotor Has 14mm studs
Price: $177.00 (each)
Estimated Availability: In Stock

Ruslow is also a great source.

Unless you're going all out with Brembos, TCE, etc., cross drilled stock rotors are a bad idea.

Next time, take a lug nut with you.

Bob

no my brakes or rotors weren't that bad! Does Ruslow have an e mail address or a web site with a phone number so I can contact him about getting new rotors? If I can't get ahold of him, I will pry just try napa again. is this the part number from Napa?
