Question Cleaning intake, blower, intercooler w/o removal?

Is there a way, or a decent "solvent" or "cleaner" that can be run through the intake to help clear out some of the oil gunk?

I know there's carb cleaner to clean it off, but is there anything that can be used while the truck is running to pull the cleaner through and clean out all the gunk? (ie. rev it up while squirting the cleaner through...)

I'm SURE mine is pretty messy with all the oil it pulls through. Just don't know if I want to tear down the blower and intercooler to clean it all out (even though it is probably the best method...)

Any ideas? or has anyone tried this?

I plan on changing the PCV valve to a different setup to stop the oil pull (I know there's 2 scools of thought on this, but seems like quite a few people have done this w/o issue...)

TIA...

If you want to do it right it will need to be taken apart to clean properly.

Any tips or "don't forget"s to worry about when tearing it down?

Man, there's just a TON of cr@p connected to the upper and s/c to make the teardown a PITA...that's why I wanted to try to shoot some cleaner through the intake to help dissolve or clear out some of the extra oil gunk...

I know they have fuel system/injector cleaners that can be attached to your fuel line and burned like gas...but I was looking for something to be run through the intake to clean it out.

Nitrous? I hear a lot of people running nitrous or water/alcohol injection have MUCH cleaner uppers, s/c's, etc... I guess that acts as somewhat of a cleaner....

I think LIGHTNINROD and others have used something called Sea Foam. I think you just remove your intake boot and spray it in the throttle body with the engine running. But how do you know if it works without taking stuff apart and looking?

It took me about 1 full day, total time, to remove the blower, I/C, clean everything and put it back. You'll need about 2 cans of carb cleaner to really clean the I/C up well. It's a "piece of cake" to change spark plugs while everything is off.

The only gotcha that I ran acorss is the thin steel gasket between the blower and I/C and between the I/C and intake manifold. Be careful not to bend them up when you remove/install the big pieces. They are held in by dowels as well so it makes a smooth removal/installation a bit tricky(and hard on your back).

Good luck, Randy

I used a spare piece of hose(3-4 feet) and attached it to the PCV tube(upper one) and put the end of the hose in a can of Sea Foam solvent/cleaner(get it at NAPA). I had my wife start the eng. It will be hard to start but it will. I let the eng. vacuum pull the solvent into the intake adaptor. It should(?) follow the path the unwanted oil took and clean it off of the i/c, etc. as the eng. burns it in the combustion chamber. Best done outside as you will get a LOT of white smoke out the exhaust. Just feed enough for the eng to still run and then as you get near the bottom of the can, let it take enough in to stall the eng. Let it sit for 5 minutes and soak but NO longer. Hook the PCV tube back up and restart the eng. Keep it running until the smoke quits. I can't say for sure(guarantee) that the i/c is clean after this but it should do the job without taking the s/c off...........

That's from an old thread. I've done it to several vehicles over the years. If you do it, be sure to change your oil and filter right after as the oil will be diluted.

Dan

Not sure what cleaning will do for the blower or intake, but when the intercooler gets clogged up with oil it looses it's efficiency.

Those pictures look like smokers lung. My truck is sitting in the garage with a set of NGKs standing by to get installed. It has 38,000 miles on it. I think I will try cleaning the I/C this weekend. Anyone got a step-by-step process? I live in 29 Palms, Ca: about three miles from the sun. Anyone want to come by and help? Steak and beer is free. R/S Dennis

Spanky99L,
In reference to the pictures of the oil in the intake...... is that normal or was this peticular truck worse than average ?
I would expect "some" oil in there ... but that looks really really bad.
Was there something else wrong with the truck besides the "normal" oil sucking and the spit plug ?

Wow that looks bad. Do you have any pics of it after it was cleaned? I'm curious to know if that was even cleanable. Thanks, Shane

If you are skilled enough, I would suggest pulling and cleaning when you get a few days off all to yourself. Mine is nowhere as bad as what was posted above, but I'm gonna clean it out this winter.

Theres a few oil seperator kits out that you can buy or make yourself. Or you can just plug up the line.
