Cool BREAK A 9.75 REAREND LATELY?? (pics)

HI!... Well after 4.5 years of punishment, my STERLING 9.75 rearend finally handed in the towel last week. Here's a few pics.

It's hard to see but the carrier it'self has many fractures in it, the main pin was slopy in it's bore, the teo smaller spider gears have huge chunks takin out of the teeth, and the clutch packs are totally destroyed. I even managed to tear off the "TABS" on the clutches themselves and many were cracked and warped.

Just a little background : Once a year no matter what the milage was, the diff fluid was changed only using REDLINE 75w90 and FORD MOTORSPORT friction modifier. NO spinning around corners or donuts were ever done. Just some wild burnouts! , and over 220 passes down the 1/4 mile + all the street racing. I upgraded to another FORD unit since I couldn't find a after market posi that had equal size spider gears. I laughed at the EATON posi unit when I actually saw it up close. No wonder they break. Well lets hope I can get another 4.5 years out of this one.

Neal,

Did it just break all together or could tell it was coming on?

I have 106K on my truck now and was thinking it's about time to rebuild?

Could you feel it slipping? I changed my U- joints when I put the new tranny in but feel a clunk when I put it in gear.

That is awesome to say the least, she took quit a beating from you. I got a feeling we will see more of those when the big dogs start running in some cool weather with slicks out back. Hope you got your truck running quickly after that.

P.S. HI!!!!

Cool

HI!... Suavy : Well I had 145,000KMS on this rearend. The last 2000KMS I could feel a vibration in the rearend and knew my clutches were going. It got so bad that I finally decided to trake care of it. Everytime I would put it into reverse or drive I would get a CLUNK and you could actually see the pinnion move about a 1/4 turn but the wheels didn't turn. By some miracle my 4.10 gears came out of all that mess in perfect condition. Not one scratch or chip.

Cool

HI!... I had my tranny builder do the rebuild and it cost me $1350(CAN) out the door. That included the new FORD carrier, pin, pin bolt, clutches, springs, all 4 spider gears, new pinnion bearing, new carrier bearings, all shims and re-setting up my 4.10 gears. I supplied the REDLINE oil and FORD friction modifier.

What kind of hp are you making, Neal. I thought the Sterling was the strongest rear made.

HI!... promodlightning : I'm only making about 345H.P/425FT/LBS (flywheel) of TQ in N/A trim. I know there's a ton of people that are making more power and not having problems with their 9.75's but mabey I got a bad one from the factory

Question Broken Sterling

Neal,

Out of curiosity, why were using Redline D4 & Ford modifier?

Why not use Redline 75-90 with the modifier that is in the fluid?

Cool

HI!... TDS : I'm glad you mentioned that. I didn't even realize that I had a typo. I meant the REDLINE 75W90 diff oil. My tranny/rearend builder told me that the friction modifier that is included in the diff oil it'self is not sufficient enough.
