Help: Buddies truck is having some problems
He has an 01 and he notices when he backs off the gas around 30 or 40mph it sounds like his exhaust sputters and pops..He also noticed he feels a slight jerk or shudder that doesn't happen all the time. He told me his truck hasn't done that before. He has 28,000 miles, Diablo chip, JLPairbox/ram air and boost bypass/ JDM oil breather.. Another problem he's having he found out the other day is water shooting out of his exhaust pipe. There is no oil or antifreeze mixed with it.. I thought it was condensation but he claims it constantly does this.. He says it drips from between a clamp where the tips connects to his silver bullets and spits out the tips.. Can anyone offer any suggestions to what this may be? Anything serious?
He still has some warranty left but just wanted some ideas on the cause... I told him to tighten the bolts up at the clamps to see if that helps.. Also he just got it back from the dealer to find out whats causing the jerk and they replaced the IAC but didn't solve the problem... He told me otherwise all his gauges are normal and the truck still pulls strong..

Not sure if this is the same in your case but here's mine...
I started feeling the sputtering but at WOT and noticed the water at WOT. I ended up blowing my head gaskets by adding high boost. Here is what I found tearing down my engine...
1) 2- burnt spark plugs that had no electrodes
2) 2- blown head gaskets
3) 3- damaged pistons
The coolant was seeping into the combustion side of my block and out the exahust.
Peace, Suavy

Everyone gets some water. Thats condensation. I get a good amount of black carbon filled water coming out between my exhaust clamps. As far as the popping, Everyone should get a popping sound after going full bore and letting off the gas all at once. If you are getting a stream of water and antifreeze coming out of your exhaust Id woory bout the head gaskets. No antifreeze, no worry. Checking your plugs would be a good idea. Pete

I'd check the plugs and the gap. I get a lot of water out of my exhaust when first starting the truck. My truck pops under deceleration, but it pops worse if there is a bad plug.

Torque Converter Locking/Unlocking
My L is the truck Rayden's Cloud post is talking about.
When cruising at 40-50 mph, if I take my foot off the accelerator, there is a hesitation. The hesitation doesn't occur at any other speed or at full throttle. It doesn't happen when braking and it hesitates with or without the chip installed.
The dealership replaced the idle air controller which didn't correct the problem. They are now saying that it's the torque converter locking and unlocking and that the hesitation is normal. They said truck is "just breaking in." Does this sound right? Why would it "break in" at 34K miles? I just want to make sure I'm not about to throw a plug before the factory warranty is out.

I would check the plugs, I changed mine this past weekend for the first time. If you have not done this before, it can be tough, but after the first time, it's pretty easy.

Tred: Where is Rex, Ga.?
I think you may have excessive EGR flow. The valve may be carboned up, keeping it open when it should shut or keeping it open too much-too long.
"breaking-in" What a crock--at 34k. It might be the T/C but I doubt it. You have verified you have a problem NOW so even if it runs past 36k, you should still be covered by the warranty.

Thanks for the tips guys!
I went to the dealership yesterday and had the Head Transmission Tech drive the truck. He connected a computer that showed the gear, rpms and when the torque converter was locking and unlocking. All numbers were normal. He even took me for a ride in an '03 L with 300 miles that did the exact same thing. Guess the "problem" isn't a problem after all.
LIGHTNINROD: Rex is about 20 minutes south of Downtown ATL

Tred: Is it the Union City dealer? I hope not as that is where I bought mine. I had no warranty issues so I never went back.
I think they are still full-of-it. You would have noticed the T/C unlocking/locking during the last 34k, Plus, the fact they replaced your IAC for " a hesitation during deacceleration at 45-50- mph" doesn't say much for their trouble-shooting expertise. The IAC isn't in the equation much(if any) above idle-rpm.
Keep all/any paperwork. I'd even make notes(right now) on who you talked to, which tech rode with you, etc. just in case you have to go back when you're out of warranty.

Allan Vigil Ford is the dealership I've been dealing with since they're the closest to home. All details have been documented and all paperwork is on file! I agree with you about their trouble-shooting expertise. I think they just put on a new part without checking for the real problem. I'll definitely take it back if I'm not still not satisfied after this week. Here's hoping that I won't have to go back for anything other than an oil change!
