HELP!! Slight "ticking noise"...

Hey guys, had an interesting question for all of you....

Recently, my truck has made this "ticking (for the lack of a better word)" noise. It is evident at idle, and is very consistent. If i increase the rpms, the ticking gets faster as the rpms rise. I can hear it the most if i put my head next to either the front left or right wheel well. Now, the noise isnt so evident that I think i need to tow it to a dealership, but it is evident enough for me to not get into any boost levels until i figure out what the hell it could be.
-I also checked my oil (5w30 i believe) and it gets a reading, although it is in the mid-range/low side. Its been just about 3000 miles since my last change....i was actually going to have it done this weekend, but could that have anything to do with my problem?

MODS: 2lber, chip (tuned conservatively), filter kit, Densos, bassani exhaust
23k miles. 01 Bolt

Hope to hear that its something simple, dreading to hear that it isnt....
what could it be guys?
thanks...

Maybe the one or more of the spark plugs are loose and about to blow?? Check them or get them checked.

I've had ticking noises twice.

Once was the precursor to a blown plug because it was loose, so CHECK YOUR PLUGS.

The second was, I blew the header exhaust gasket once.

Check the exhaust, I think if it was a plug it would have blown out completely by now.

well ive been driving on it for a few days now...
it has seemed to run fine, if the plugs were loose, wouldnt it run funny? My truck runs fine, it just has that weird noise. Do you guys think its safe for me to drive it to get it fixed somewhere?
I dont really wanna take it to the dealer, any other well-known place here in the cali bay area i could take it to? what about like a kragen store or something?
ANY IDEAS?

If you have a plug that is "only" loose, then it will NOT cause the truck to run funny, because the plug is still firing.

CHECK YOUR PLUGS NOW!!!!!
ASAP!!!
QUICK, FAST AND IN A HURRY!!!.....NOW!!!

If you catch it before it blows(AND IT WILL BLOW...SOON), then no damage will be done. Man, I cannot stress this enough. I personally have several friends whose plugs launched, shortly after they began hearing the infamous "ticking" sound. If you cannot check them now, then PARK IT, until you can, or you run the risk of having a pain in the a$$ repair to deal with. BTW it does NOT have to be in boost to blow if it gets loose enough!

I'm not trying to scare you, just don't want you to be the next added to the list. Good Luck!

motoxracer21, I live in San Mateo and I have a ticking noise coming from my truck also. I hear mine more on the passengers side of the truck though. I think mine sounds more like an exhaust leak though.

Maybe you may have the same problem. Just a guess.

Some ticking noises could be from the exhaust pipes, when metal heats up sometimes it makes ticking noises.

I have 22,000 miles on my 2002 L, and have NEVER, EVER heard anything that resembled a ticking noise. As I stated before, I have several friends with L's that have launched plugs, and EVERY ONE of them heard the "ticking" prior to launching a plug.

I HOPE I am wrong.

You guys do what you feel you need to do, but if a plug decides to exit stage left and you wind up with a $2500 repair bill staring you in the face, because you dismissed it as an exhaust leak, rather than spend a couple hours checking them(cost: $0 and minimal downtime), then that is ultimately your decision, because YOU"RE the one that's going to have to fork out the cash and have to deal with the inconvenience of your vehicle being down for an extended period of time.
I apologize for getting on my soapbox. Bottom line: it's your trucks, it's your money, it's your time....I just don't want to have to say "I told you so "

Later,
Rob

I completely agree with you! Its just tough for me to make time to get the plugs checked or even check them myself with school and work etc..
I guess ill make an appointment at the dealer next week and just drive my moms 540 around
can a dealer screw me with my warrenty, even though loose plugs have nothin to do with my mods?

Motor, I understand your dilema, and yes the Dealer will void your wrrnty

Like we're all saying, "if" it's loose
it's only a matter of time til it launchs
and with a pulley and chip, you can kiss your wrrnty GOOD-BY
So unless you prepaired to go for MAJOR MONEY and buy new heads,
I WOULD NOT DRIVE IT ONE INCH TIL THE PLUGS ARE CHECKED
