Question Help for a first timer please???

Well, I developed a tick the other day and I'm going to try changing the plugs. This will be my first time and I did some searching for stock plugs and how tos. Here is what I've come up with so far:

1) 7MM Swivel PN# 43193 from sears
2) 5/8 Spark Plug Socket
3) 3/8 Swivel
4) 2 - 6" Extensions
5) 2 - 3" Extensions
6) Pickup Magnetic tool

Spark Plug Socket to 3" Extension to 3/8 Swivel to 6" Extenstions

Remove wire connector by pushing clip, remove 7MM bolt then plug.

Finger tight plus 1/16 upon reinstall

What about the 7mm? How many extensions etc???

What is the part# for stock plugs and what is the gap?

Anything I've got wrong or forgot?

I've got all Saturday free to do the job and want to get the right parts today.

Thanks for any help guys, I love this forum.

Jim

be careful

be careful not to strip or cross thread my truck just got added to the blown plug list and i had never had a wrench on them. also i think they make a trim 5/8 socket so it will fit in the hole better a standard plug socket is very snug. good luck.

Don't forget a 1/4" drive adapter if you are using 3/8" extensions (for the 7mm swivel). I found it a little easier to use a long 1/4" drive extension for getting at the back coil pack bolts.

If you run into any problems while you are doing it tomorrow.
Just jump on here and give me a yell. I will be at work all day
tomorrow and will spend a lot of the day on these boards, as
well as SVTperformance.com.
Just take your time and work methodically and you should be fine.

2 6" 1\4" ext. and 2 3" 1\4" ext.
I used a swivel spark plug socket which helped a lot.

Before I started I elliminated anything that would normally frustrate me. I cleared my area, had all my tools laid out and even taped my cord down so I wouldn't trip over it like I always do. I used wire ties to tie move a few hoses out of my way etc.

This was my first plug change (ever) I took it slow 1 plug at a time and it took me 5hrs. that was with breaks and lunch. I have since re-checked them in under 2hrs easy.

Good luck, you'll get it.

You should tape your extension to the spark plug socket because after you tighten the plug down and you try to pull the socket out, it'll come off the extension and stay on the plug which is a pain in the *** to get out. Well, for me it was.

I'm taking in all your great advice! I just went to sears hardware and bought half of the tools (the other half I have)

Here is what I got

1) 7MM Swivel Socket (43193) = $7.49
2) 5/8 Spark Plug Socket(43324) = $3.99
3) 3/8 to 1/4 adapter(04256) = $3.99
4) 3/8 Ratchet(44815) = $19.99 (I decided to get a new shinny one but, I didn't really need it)

I've got 2 6" extensions at home and 1 3"

I also have a 1/4 6" extension so I was thinking of using the adapter on the end of the 1/4 extension and taping them together with the swivel. That way with the spark plug socket taped to the 3/8 6" extension and 3/8 swivel, I can just swap them onto the same ratchet. Anything I'm missing or are these the right tools?

That should be plenty. IThat's more stuff than I had when I did it. It took me a bit over 3 hours.

Be prepared for some frustration with the coil pack bolts and the #7 plug, but it really isn't all that bad. You will want to pat yourself on the back after you are done.

Either hand insert the 7 mm's when you put the
plug back OR tape them to the swivel with a single
wrap of elctrical tape with just a tad around the
"washer" part of the bolt.

Also, get some Clean Air Blaster in a can to blow out the
plug areas BEFORE you take the plug out ... Keeps all
that nasty stufff outta the cylinders.

Oh yeah ... buy lot's of

Well, I got them all out after about 3 hrs. This would have not taken so long had I not dropped my 3/8 swivel socket trying to get out the back passanger side plug. Third back on the dirver side was not near as tough as the one I dropped the swivel on. Then I had to go to walmart looking for another because they were the only store open at 10 pm. Anyway, they didn't have one but I was able to get it out anyway. Funny thing is, I still don't know where the hell my swivel socket went.
I hope it falls out sometime, I don't want that thing stuck back there forever. I had a little trouble with others but nothing bad. Tomorrow, I will go get some new plugs and reinstal. I do not think the plugs were my ticking noise, all plugs were tight and looked good.
