Does oil have a shelf life?

I found some Mobil 1 0w-20 but it looks like its been in the store for a long time. I'm pretty sure I saw it there at least 6 months ago, maybe longer. Can that stuff go bad? This is my first run with synthetic so I don't want to put in a bad first batch.

There is no shelf life -- All you have to worry about is leaks/contamination

Motor oil typically has a shelf life of at least 3 years and even longer for unopened and properly stored oil. The Mobil 1 would be fine.

First, Mobil 1 0w-20 is a new product out this year, released no more than six months ago. Second, unopened, oil has a shelf life of a good 7 years. Once you open the bottle moisture will get inside and all that changes.

Even still, old oil doesn't spoil or go bad. The biggest problem is a 10 year old quart of oil has the specs of 10 years ago which won't meet the required specs for your vehicle unless it's also 10 years old.

Just a useless stupid observation about Mobile 1-- When you spray it with castrol super clean degreaser , it turns purple whereas regular motor oil doesn't.... really weird

AND if you think i have too much time on my hands you might be right, but I used to work in autoparts and cleaned up spilled oil a lot
