Question Question about towing the Lightning.

All you guys that tow your trucks to the track or have towed it before for any reason. What kind of vehilce did you use>??? Has anyone done it with a Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon 4-door. I can get a decent price on a 97 that needs a tranny. Most likely I will be buying it and selling my Bronco. I am just curious how I can expect it to tow. It would tow a car like my GN without any problems but the Lightning wigh a good 1,000LBs more. I will also be using an open trailer flat deck. In no way do I want to make my Lightning a trailer queen, I just want a little more piece of mind with the power I am putting out. Thanks, please share all opinions and experiences. -Mat-

I think a tahoe will do just fine towing an open trailer.
I have used my moms escalade many times to tow my truck to the track or I use a dodge ram. The escalade obviously pulls better with that 345 hp engine!!
and it looks cooler to!!!

As long as it has the 350ci engine, you should have no problem. Get the brakes checked out as well especially if your trailer doesnet have brakes.

Funny you said it needs a tranny. I had a Tahoe and couldn't keep the trans happy with a built motor. I love Chevy but they use that samn 4L60E in their 1/2 tons. It is the same tranny as the V6 Camaro it has aluminum planetaries etc. Get a good one if you plan on towing with it. I would say it is okay for short hauls. Make sure to use the trailer brakes. A 97 Yukon has single piston fronts and drum rear brakes. Then again I like stuff to be setup tough, most people can baby around about anything that I would end up breaking..

Yea what they said-- trailer brakes :-)

Also a tandem-axle trailer is nice since they have a higher capacity and usually reduce the tongue weight significantly compared to a single axle...

Just my $.02

It's all about pulling a trailer to the track with your slicks and some of your friends tools in it then kicking some a**

We have a twin axle open trailer, with brakes. I would not tow without trailer brakes on something like that. It has a 350, they all do but some have the turbo diesels. Yum. I should be getting it on Saturday. Hopefully do the trans on Monday or Tuesday. You ca upgrade the aluminum planets to steel if it has them. I will probably do simple bolts-ons like catback, air filter setup and a T/B spacer. I will be sure to check everything over before I do any towing of course. -Mat-

Get a vehicle with a long wheelbase like another pickup.....you will be much happier with less trailer swaying....and yes get a trailer with electric brakes.....it will one day save you.....
