which camshafts to choose? Crower, ModMax, Crane or Comp?

hey guys, I'll do a search, but I just wanted some fresh opinions on camshafts, valves and springs.

I know there have been a couple of articles in MM&FF and 5.0/Superford magazines about cam swaps lately in mustangs with minor gains (25hp or so).

I was looking at the selection from Crower with their stainless valves and springs.

it seems that I remember hearing some people having problems with breaking valve springs and some people have lost torque with ported heads.

any opinions on which brand are welcome.

I'm not going with a larger blower at this time, I'll be spraying instead, and the truck is a street driver, not race only, so I suspect I need a street or street/strip cam.

also which brands are the tuners selling?

thanks,
chris

I got the Crower stage 3s by accident....I was supposed to get the stage 2s, but builder put the 3s in by accident and I decided to keep them....they run good but like to make power high around 6000 plus....Id go with the Crower stage 2s for the street, anything Crower makes is the bomb......

Yep, we can get you the ModMax cams, there are several grinds to choose from. We run Modmax ported heads, with Modmax valves, spring, retainers and keepers.

I have the crower 62802 (stage 2) cams and ported heads with SS valves. I saw 0 gains going from a stock setup to this one (even with a dyno tune). I broke a Manley valve spring (exhaust #7) doing 45mph exiting the freeway and am in the process of switching to crower springs. If you're spraying, I'd buy from Sal since he seems to have the most experience fine tuning N20 setups.

I did not do cams because of the fact that for one, in the future someone might offer a better head setup, but for two, everyone that I talked too said there isn't much to be gained from them. If this was true, and it might be then they are all about the same, but Comp is a really good cam for sprint car motors. I would think they make good mod cams too.

I have been real happy with my Crowers, I am sure the ModMax cams that Sal sells are good too.

Mine are slightly different than the other Crowers out there. I am not going to give out the exact specs, that is between Jim and myself. They are a stage 3 with a little bit of duration taken out, so they are sort of like a stage 2.5

They help smooth the idle out a little and daily driveability is awesome. I am sure any of the Cam manufactures could do something simillar to mine. Just ask who ever you go with what they can do.

That pic was taken before the cams and blower. That was last year.

With a little research, you will find that Dima Elgin of Elgin Cams in Redwood City CA was the first to come up with decent replacement cam setup for the Modular engine family.

He specializes in camshafts for OHC engines and has designed numerous grinds that work in Ferraris, Jags and even Ford Cosworth engines.

From what I understand, some of our favorite engine builders used his cams until the market became lucrative enough that Crower, Crane and Comp jumped in, in many instances, simply copying his profiles.
