If you use cruise control..read this

Something someone e-mailed me.. I dont use cruise control except on the hwy sometimes since I dont like not having my foot on the pedal and all, but I never thought of what this paragraph tells you either.

A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago and totaled her car.
A resident of Kilgore, Texas, she was traveling between Gladewater & Kilgore.
It was raining, though not excessive, when her car suddenly began to hydroplane
and literally flew through the air.

She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the highway patrolman what had happened he told her
something that every driver should know -NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH
YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She had thought she was being cautious by
setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain. But the
highway patrolman told her that if the cruise control is on and your car begins to
hydroplaned - when your tires loose contact with the pavement your car will
accelerate to a higher rate of speed and you take off like an airplane.. She told the
patrolman that was exactly what had occurred.

We all know you have little or no control over a car when it begins to hydroplane.
You are at the mercy of the Good Lord. The highway patrol estimated her car was
actually traveling through the air at 10 to 15 miles per hour faster than the speed set
on the cruise control.

The patrolman said this warning should be listed, on the drivers seat sun-visor
NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR
ICY- along with the airbag warning.

We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed but we don't tell
them to use the cruise control only when the pavement is dry.

The only person the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the patrolman),
was a man who had had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries.

If you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't know about this, then it was
all worth it. You might have saved a life.

i sometimes use it on the highway to cruise at a contstant speed on cop infested highways, but since I got my valentine1 I tend to not use cruise control and drift between various speeds as highway conditions and average surrounding traffic speeds apply

and if it were to be raining (a rarity around here) I think just by instinct I would 'of course' not be using cruise control.

but thats what natrual selection is all about i suppose, bettering our instincts.

..its too bad most of *those* people end up killing others in the process, thats a "not so natural selection"

Shifting into neutral with the cruise on gets quite a reaction as well.

Cruise is great on a long highway trip. Ever notice sometimes you drift off and slow down to the speed limit. I set it at 70-75 that way I never slow down accidentally.

Sounds fishy to me, To begin with the Cruise control has parameters that only allow the vehicle to appy x amount of power to get up to speed. If your driving with Cruise on @ 65 and slow to 40, then RESUME the cruise, it slowly increases your speed, it doesnt go Wide open throttle. Also if your vehicle starts to hydroplane and your on cruise, your 1st reaction is gonna be to hit the brakes or step on the clutch, disableing the cruise control. The next thing is whenever you hydroplane the wheels start to spin faster, the cruise is going to reduce power not increase. Dont you guys think if cruise controls were a problem the Lawyers and DOT would be all over it, this seems like driver error more than anything.

Talking

No offense to Konig but, here is how to recognize garbage on the internet:

(One)
"Something someone e-mailed me...."

(Two)
blah...blah,...blah...

(Three)
"If you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't know about this, then it was all worth it."
(or words to that effect)

hehehe,
Of course all you Lightning owners know that when the tires lose traction the truck goes faster, kind of like an airplane WHOOOSH!

(I put six pounds of butter on my rear tires and shaved off 4/10s)

This is something my father sent me, and he Never sends me anything...so I tend to believe it.

I dont know if it applys to all vehicles or not... I know my '93 Bronco with the 5.0L would take off like a bat out of hell if you hit the resume button.. it WOULD go WOT until it reached whatever speed was set in the cruise control. Thats probably one of the reasons I dont use it..damn thing scared me every time I tried it on that truck.
