non L tires

Hi,
I tried doing a search but did not find quite what i was looking for. First, i don't have a lightning, but a reg. f150 that sees the dragstrip every so often. So i am not putting down as much power and torque as you guys, but the track i race at is pretty bad, right now my 60' are in the 2.6 range(open diff) on F1's. My goal is low 14's to high 13's just to give you an idea of what kind of power and type of modding that will be done. I am gonna also step up to 4.10's(with trac loc), so traction would be harder to find. so i am wondering if you guys could advise me as to what tires i should get. I don't know whether i should look into some DR's, DOT slicks, or slicks. What do you guys think? Also, would the hoosier 28x10x16 work on 16x7 rims? Thanks.

For the amount of power you're making I'd strongly recommend DR's. Just get them good and warm. They hooked up my L to the tune of a 12.49@109 w/ a 1.80 60ft @ 26psi air pressure (over 500 lb/ft tq@ rear wheels). Plus they're gonna have less rolling resistance, enabling your truck to run stronger out the back door!
In reference to the Hoosiers, you need at LEAST an 8"W wheel.
Hoosiers IMO are overkill on a NA 5.4/4.6...DR's will hook you up just fine and what's more is you can run 'em on the street(safely)!
Hope this helps, Good Luck in your quest for low ET's

Rob

thanks a lot for your replies. It is nice to get opinions from the lightning guys, thats why i post here, you guys seem to have a lot of race knowledge . So you think that the DR's will work well even with 4.10's and a crummy track? I mean i get terrible traction with F1's(even though they are pretty worn). thanks once again.

personally i was looking at DR's but for the cost of 2 more wheels and DR's i can get slicks and wheels cheaper, so thats the route i am going. unless of course you just wanna daily drive on the DR's

Keep in mind that he is making A LOT less HP & TQ than you are. Once he gets out of the hole, any type of bias ply tire is going to slow him down the remainder of his trip down the track. The reason L's benefit from slicks or ET Streets is they (especially modded) generate enough power to overcome the increased rolling resistance of the tire.

PoorSVTman,
I live in Grand Prairie @ I-20 and Carrier, and have several L friends in S. Arlington. I probably spend more time in S. Arlington than I do in GP! There are however a couple of Silver L's in S. Arlington w/ black wheels, but mine is the only one w/ HRE's. If you ever see me rolling down there, flag me down!

See ya 'round,

Rob

thanks for the replies. I would run DR's on the street also rather than switching them around. what do you guys think of the nitto 305/55/18's? They are pretty tall, but they look pretty mean too since they would be tucking in the rear. It would kinda look old school, with the fat tires tucking. Thanks.

That's what I run on the street ! Just make sure you use at LEAST a 9"wide wheel (preferably a 9.5" or 10"). Anything narrower than a 9" width and either the tire won't fit or the sidewall will have too much roll in it causing the rear of the truck to be extremely unstable.

wait, which tire are you talking about running on the street? the DR's or the 302/55/18? Whichever one it is, how do you like it on the street or track if you use it there? thanks once again.

Sorry 'bout that. I'm referring to the DR, which is 305/45/18, it was designed for the L. I run it on the street, and at the track when I don't feel like bolting on the slicks. Give 'em a shot, you'll love 'em!
