Question What size pulley before chip?

I have seen some guys on here running 3#s and what have you without a chip. My question is at what point is a chip needed to run a pulley. If i was to go with a 4# pulley would it be recomended to go with a chip?

Thanks,
Kyle

Thumbs up IMO

You can run a 4lber without a chip...but you can optimize the gain with a chip.... that's just my 2 cents

I talked to Justin @ JDM and he said anything more than a 2#er is putting to much strain on the tranny after a while without a chip. Can someone concur with this statement. I would like to know if running a 4#er is alright without a chip and for how long?

dont they turn off the boost dump and keep all 8 fireing on the 1-2 shift and up the line presure

I dont know if its good or bad, In my case I havent experienced any bad. My truck has run a best of 12.97@106(Mids 80s) and high 90 high humidity temps runs 13.4s@103ish. The only reason I dont have a chip is, Ive been waiting for the Diablo Predator.

BTW I have verified a/f ratios on a dyno with the pulley.

Eatoncharged- 12.9 is too lean, are you saying you run 8lbs with a chip ?
John,

Your truck sounds really strong! What other mods do you have on it? And what year is your lightning and who did you purchase the 6# pulley from? JLP?

Has anyone else experienced no problems with a 4# pulley or greater?

Wow....that sounds like my experiances.

(NGK plugs were installed with the pulleys) I ran a 4lb with no chip for 4000 miles , best time was 12.96 @ 106 (60 degree temps) and would run 13.3 @ 102 (90 degrees)

I even ran a 6lb pulley for about 800 miles or so without a chip (no et's)

Had the truck dynoed with the 4lb and the A/F's looked great.

I never put in a chip either because of waiting for the Predator, but I got the KB and a Reflash now.

I have been running a 5lb JLP pulley without a chip for at least 11/2 years. My truck is an 01 with 50,000 miles. I have dynoed it 2 times and got a 12/1 A/F both times. As for the trans, I personally like the computer to drop the boost on the shift.

4#

4# lower installed - no chip, stock plugs from 25k-30k. Starting running like crap; swapped plugs and problem solved! Drivers side third plug was LOOSE...

Still running REALLY STRONG.

Disclaimer: results may vary

SVT02 ran a 8# lower and 2# lower, with every other bolt-on, without a chip. This was daily driven, even raced in the winter. Ran a best of 12.2 in January. It wasn't until he took a long trip to his tuners shop that they blew his engine on the dyno burning him a chip. Draw your own conclusions.

I've had the JL 3# for 42k miles with no chip, no problems.
