My L ate a socket with extension!

Over the weekend I installed a JDM intake spacer. I was removing the driver's side rear intake bolt with a 1/4 inch drive, 8mm socket with a 3 inch extension. When I was removing the bolt the extension slipped out of my hand and fell behind the engine I spent over 2 hours looking for it as it did not fall through.

I looked behind the supercharger, around the fire wall and underneath with no success. I then jumped up and down like mad on the back bumper hoping it would fall out with no luck. I then used my compressor and hit it with some air and nothing. As my last resort, I took it out for a hard test drive with turns, starts and stops. It still did not spit it.

I am thinking of going after it with a power washer hoping it frees it up. Does anyone have any suggestions where I may want to look? It fell directly behind the supercharger in the middle. I don't like the idea of driving around with a free tool in my engine compartment.

Thanks and wish me luck!

OK, now that I'm done laughing at the thought of you jumping up and down on the bumper....maybe try a flexible shaft magnet??? They are pretty handy.

I'd bet it is in the engine valley.

Maybe you too will get lucky and find a prize inside like Doug did!

I dropped a socket behind my engine a few weeks ago. I kept looking and shaking the truck around with no luck. I wouldnt have started the engine though, I was worried it would be wedged on something that moves and damage my engine.

After much looking around, a LOT of cursing and punching my garage door...the answer came... I asked some ELSE to look for it. Bastard found it in about 3-4 mins of looking, I used one of those long "claw" tools for picking up dropped tools to get it out. Needless to say, his drinks were on me that night.

Way back when I used to have my 94' SE-R, I lost a socket in some part of the engine compartment. A week later a found a thread on the message boards with about 10 other people who lost sockets in what they called the 'black hole'.

My favorite one is when my dad had been looking for a pair of vise grips he used on adjusting the clutch cable on beetles (back when he had a VW shop)

Of course I got blamed for the missing tool until I did a clutch adjustment for one of our regulars. There they were still hanging onto the cable end he had put them on several years earlier.

The lost tool cracks slowed down for awhile.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as it didn't fall inside the intake. I've lost lots of various tools inside my engine bay. Usually falls on top of the intake, in front of the fan shroud, near the valley where the front springs are located, or any other place you can't see.

Thanks for all of your help. I just spent another 2 hours looking for the dam thing with no luck. I even purchased 2 mechanic mirrors and a bendable flashlight looking for it. I think it got swallowed up in the space under the intake and block. I hope it does not hurt anything.

I think my only options are to take off the supercharger and intake or turn the L upside down and shake it!

Maybe I will park it with the front end going down hill and jump up and down on it again. Hopefully it will move to the front.

Keep the ideas coming and I am glad that I am not the only one to do this. I think I just joined the "Engine Eat Tool" club..

I have to laugh at you because we've all been there for the most part, and its funny everytime. I almost pulled the lower intake and all when i dropped a bolt one time, but then i got under the truck and looks up on the backside of the engine and spotted it wedged up there, so get it on a lift and see if you can spot it, can't hurt in the least, if not, just forget it, its gone. If you engine ever seizes for no good reason thats probably the reason why.
