Cheap solution for New PCM

I was talking with Cyntaxx last night and came up on a idea. I called my local boneyard this afternoon and found they will sell me a new pcm out of a Standard F150 for $45. Here is what I plan on doing, I will check with sources to see if this computer can be flashed for a Lightning. I know that on a Mustang a 5sp CPU can be flashed to control a Auto trans. If the PCM cant be reflashed I will use it as a core on a New PCM from Ford. I have buddies at Ford that will sell me a Lightning PCM for cost. Now I just need to check to see if this PCM can work.

More to come.

I think the computers in the L are L specific. I dont think that is going to work. Not %100 sure on that though.

This is true, but remember Im going to try and have it reflashed. The reflash will load it with Data needed to operate a Lightning. The only problem will be if a Reg F150 Computer is lacking pins that a Lightning has. Like I said I know Mustang Computers are all the same, Im hoping the Lightnings are too.

It can be done with some PCMs. I've reflashed HD PCMs to Lightning calibrations, and reflashed certain Lightning PCMs to other Lightning cals. I would say with 90% assurance that you could probably reflash a current F-150 PCM to a Lighnting calibration. Heck, even if you can't, for $45 it's worth the $100 core alone.

I would think the regular f150 pcm is missing the intercooler and boost bipass circuitry.

It doesn't work like that Don. For the most part, Ford uses the same base PCM for most V8 vehicles. It's cheaper to put in all the extra $.02 components than it is to build several PCMs. All the pins and drivers are there to run different items. Heck, I can make a stock PCM run your electric fan. It's all in the calibration .

Yeah there are like 4 or 5 sensor PIDs in the NGS for the Electric Fan... Make me laugh every time I see them

I spoke to Mark @ BOP directly about this. Cyntaxx got his info from me, as it was my idea.

Anyway, Mark talked to the 'Re-Calibrator,' and he told me that although it 'may' work, the 'Re-Calibrator' wouldn't guarantee to stablity/reliabilty of it due to not knowing the history of the particular unit.

Take from this what you want.

*EDIT* I read too much into what you are trying to do. Using it as a core would be a good way to save $50. I thought you were trying to get the unit you got at the salvage yard re-calibrated.

Yeah, Kimball came up with the original idea. There's also some other sneaky ideas that Buzz came up with but I won't post them here

Buzz, you going to NMRA or what??

Cyntaxx- I dont think so, I have some work early Saturday Morning and need to be up early Monday. I have the opportunity to go to a open track event, Ive always done it down the 1/4 but never been on a open track road course. I get to ride shotgun and learn, so I dont look like a a$$ 1st time out.

I thought about this a while ago and bought an EEC from fordpartsonline.com. They sent me an EEC with the code ABU2. The code on my Harley truck is EK01. Can this EEC be recalibrated and used for my truck? I don't even know what car or truck this EEC came out of with a code of ABU2.

Thanks Ayrton, you da man. So it stands to reason that this EEC should work fine with my truck.

Kinda like us 99 Lightning folks got to wire our trucks with key pads for only the cost of the keypad. Because the support hardware is installed on every truck, even though the option may not be there/not selected.

Easier to make 1 generic template with all bells and whistles than 5 diff. templates for each whistle. It would be pretty damn confusing to figure out which truck had which wiring setup especially from the outside.

Double check the "fine" part as some things may need to be tweaked. I know the Harley programs are different than the L programs.
