Pulley question

What vendor and type (caged, interchangable, non-caged) of pulley have you found to give you the least amount of problems. I am looking for a 4 lb that is easy to install and remove. I have done a search but would like to here your personal experiences, good and bad.

I got an ASP pulley from Mike Troyer (www.troyerperformance.com) and am very, very pleased with it. His kit includes an ASP cageless pulley and the correct length gatorback belt for $225+S&H. Install was really quite simple, and took me around 1.5 hours. Study the directions for a little bit, and it is easy with the front up on ramps or jack stands.

Keep a couple things in mind; you will need a 14mm hex "key" to get the stock pulley off. I believe Sal's kit (powersurgeperformance.net) does include this for extra $$. Mike's kit doesn't include this, but you can find this tool in a 3 pack at any Autozone for $8. Some kits also include the "torque converter strap" that is required to keep the engine from turning as you remove the stock pulley. You can also use a 15mm box end wrench (or combination wrench) instead, which is what I did. Worked fine.

Just make sure you get a new belt with your kit, wherever you go. The gatorback is much better than the stocker.

Good luck!

I run the PSP 4# non-caged pulley from Sal. Pulley, belt, socket, and tools in the package runs around +/- $250.00 (if I remember correctly). Install was a snap. Would definitely recommend.

Im with him---I love the PSP #4 lower--its uncaged and the install was basically a breeze. Pay the extra $$$ (40bucks i think) for the tool and the belt. The directions are very detailed and the pulley is high quality......

My $.02

I have seen posts where people were trying to remove the larger pulley (2,4,or 6 lb) to put the stock pulley back on and had to destroy the larger pulley to get it off. What type of pully do people have trouble getting off? I am trying to stay away form problem pulleys. It seems that most are running cageless pulleys. Do the cageless pulleys cause more stress on the front crank main bearing?

When you start taking that stock caged pulley off, you will see why people like cageless.

Also, if you need to change accessory belt, you have to remove the caged pulley.

Just go cageless, I've got the Metco and I like it. But do get the install kit and follow the directions. I tried to take pulley off my way and had to get towed to a shop!!!!!

The PSP cageless pulleys come right off. Three bolts and you're done. The original caged pulley is kind of a pain to take off but once it's off life is easy.

Don't get the JDM as it will never come off. These are the pulleys that pulley can't get off.... great design
Get a CAGELESS piece and you will be set.
