...so I have been thinking for awhile about whether or not to go with an electric fan/Cobra R WP combo.
Now that it's up to 118 degrees out, what have you noticed with your trucks, if any, temp wise?
I was a bit leery about doing this swap due to the heat concern, I tried it on my Bronco with unacceptable results.
I daily drive my truck, and it sees some stop and go traffic, but nothing major.
I also tow with it occasionally too (4x4 Samurai on a trailer, about 4000lbs total) so that may be a concern too, maybe not?
Just curious before I spent the $500 to do this swap...?
Thanks!!

This is a good subject, Im sure with 118 degree airtemps the temps of the asphalt are well over 160 degrees. That means in the stop and go traffic this is the air flowing thru your radiator trying to cool the truck. Here is what Ive seen with my truck, In 100 degree Texas heat in traffic with A/C running the truck ran no hotter than it did stock. I have towed somewhere about 5000lbs in 95 degree temps but that wasnt in traffic. Again, the truck ran no different than it did before electric fan/water pump. About the $500 for electric fan, Do a search on how to do it much cheaper if your inerested in saving a few bucks. Its not for everybody but since you work on a rock crawler,(Samari on trailer) Im assuming you can do it.
I live in LAs Cruces NM and it gotten up to 110 here and even once my truck thermostat said 126, but I've had an REM electric fan setup since May. It's been working great. I've notice that the truck runs cooler, the A/C feels cooler, and this has been in stop and go traffic mostly. The fan pulls alot more cfm's then the stock setup. Anyways it works great for me.
I believe the Flex-a-lite 2700 dual fans push 5500 cfm, a bit more than the 3400 cfm that the single Ford OEM electric fans most of the vendors are using. You may want to go this route if you need extra volume.....just a suggestion.
I got the FAL 270 kit. You'll be glad you did too.

WOW! Great posts guys!
Lol @ Buzz, yeah owning a Samurai does involve some fab work to say the least...
I don't think it would be an issue, just don't want to have to cut up the truck any if I don't have to.
Well it sounds as though it works as well if not better than the OEM mech. fan which is exactly what I was looking to hear.
I will have to see about getting one soon then? (Hafta ask the boss...)
Thanks for the code BTW...

I've had the flex-a-lite 270 for a while now and I impressed with the quality and performance. I live in Florida where it gets pretty hot too, I've had absolutely NO problems with it and my trucks temp stays right in the middle of the operating range no matter what I'm doing (sitting in traffic, getting groceries, racing
...). You'll be very happy with this setup. If you get it, post a thread and I can get some pictures for you to help you with the setup.

Drkone,
Here is what I posted over on the NHTOC board about my experience so far with this install:
I received and installed my LFP E-Fan, Cobra Water Pump, Denso IT-20 spark plugs and 170 Thermostat. I will have to say that the E-Fan is one of finest parts that I have received. I would consider the E-Fan and wiring to be of OEM quality or better. Once it is installed I don't believe that anyone would believe it wasn't installed from Ford. It is so stealthy that only when you turn on the key and hear the fan run can you even tell it is there. And just when you think the fan is moving huge amounts of air, you can kick the high speed switch on and get hurricane force air flow. My faux temperature gauge from Ford is now reading about 1/2 tick lower and that is in 115 degree heat. The air conditioner works great now at idle and slow traffic conditions. All these parts were put on to allow my engine and drive train to operate at a much lower overall temperature which is really needed in the heat of Arizona. If you are sitting on the fence about the E-fan and Cobra water pump, I would say go for it you won't be sorry.
So after driving it with this setup for the last week in the high heat my opinion is still the same. My truck not only runs cooler but seems to have more power and does not lug as much when heat soaked.

GRY GHST- Thanks for the write up!
sounds like this would be a good setup for me then...
One question too, is did you have to swap the thermostat, or did you just do this for extra insurance?
The other thing is the plugs, are you running a different pulley, so as to run the cooler plugs?
I have already had the spark plug launch feature once on my truck.
The last thing I want is for it to happen again, and not be using stock plugs, I think the dealer would have issues with that...
Viper 8- Thanks for the part numbers and the offer!
I'm not sure when I will be doing this swap, since we have a third car we are trying to sell, and I can't spend any extra money until it's gone... Hopefully soon though!

GRY GHST great post... I know how bad my L suffers once the heat gets up there. I plan on taking care of that soon. On another note, I hope both of you guys will stop by the AZLOC forum (if you havent already) and say hello sometime.
Drkone,
To answer your questions about the thermostat and Denso plugs. I installed both to help in keeping cylinder temperatures as low as possible without causing a check engine code. Also since I was already involved with replacing the water pump I figured that I might as well do the plugs and thermostat. I do not have a lower pulley as that could cause the loss of my engine warranty
I was carefull to use an accurate torque wrench on my plugs to prevent any plug loss issues.
KCinAZ,
Thanks for the heads up on the AZLOC board, I will check it out.
