Poor radio recption - how to fix?

I have had poor reception with the radio in my truck.... it's as if I was driving around with no antennae. The dealer has checked it over and over, and now it comes down to the fact that they think the chip is causing this. It's a Superchip flip chip... could that actually cause my poor reception? I know most here have chips, but do any of you also have poor radio reception? Is there any way to correct this?

Cool

I too have poor reception! It's like you say, almost as if there was no antenna.

I think it has gotten progressivly worse w/time. As far as the chip thing? I donno? But mine got noticably worse after the april dragstrip meet where I used ETs streets.

I dont think its the chip. I had my Superchip for a year before my reception got bad.

But still, you could pull it out and see what happens.

Yep Phil, you've got electrical gremlins big time, buddy. Fog lights, radio... Probably caught them from riding in my old Camaro. Next thing you know your truck will just die going 95mph down a country road

I noticed lately that the weaker stations around here don't come in as well as they used to, but the stronger ones sound OK. Maybe it is the chip?!?

After looking at it further, the problem DOES lie in the chip. The Reception dramatically improves when flipping the different programs on the chip. Why in the world would that be. Street side gives better reception than race side..... maybe it's a sign.

How odd I hate electricity and wiring. That's why I build bridges.

I posted on here a couple of weeks ago about getting bad reception after installing a chip with no real good answers. Yesterday I finally got ahold of JL at his shop and he told me about to plastic plugs toward the back of the fuel rails on our trucks that are for interferance from the engine. I thought maybe I had unplugged one of them while changing my plugs to the Denso's. Anyways, I checked the plugs when I go home yesterday and they seemed fine so I justed pushed them together tighter just to be sure. I checked all of my fuses, and antenna connections also.

Anyways, I found nothing that appeared to be wrong, but whatever I did fixed my problem because today my radio is working like new. So I would check those plugs if I were you guys. They are grey plastic, and there is one on each side near the rear of the fuel rail.

Hope this helps
Scott.

Install some RF chokers on the wires coming from the switch to the chip, it will fix your problems. You can do that instead of putting a shielded cable around the wires.

The wires for the switch are acting as an antenna and directing stray RF into the ECM and vise versa- acting as a weak RF transmitter that plays havoc with the radio signal - not the radio itself. I had an EECTuner on my old Cobra with the same problem when I left the serial comm cable plugged in. The 'fix' was to wrap the comm lead in aluminum foil. That was a bit too 'backwoods' so I went to a shielded cable.

Also check the ground for your PCM-ECU what ever you call it.

It is one of the wires on the firewall on the right side of the truck. My chip was causing me poor reception, I cleaned all the grounds on the firewall, and the reception improved.

Troyer fixed this for me over the winter... just needed shielded cables, and I also routed the switch/wire in the tray along the bottom edge of the glovebox. Everything has worked fine all summer.
