How do we make our 3rd gear stronger?

I've got slicks and enough torque to spin the tires through 2nd gear to 3rd. But once I hit 3rd the truck seams slow to me. Im not sure if it's a mind over matter thing. Cause in 1st and 2nd im smoking the tires, or what. But my 3rd gear seams kinda weak. It's been like that sence it was stock. I'm not sure if modding it has helped or hurt it. But I am curious to see how I can improve my pull in 3rd gear. I am currently running at the track on 26" tires so that does raise my gear to a 3:73 which I dont want when talking about pull in higher gears... So if I get a 28" tire will my et times decrease cause the smaller gear (off the line) or increase cause the lower gear in 3rd? Not just for racing. im talking about driving around town, anything. the truck is very throttle responsive and in any gear it gets up and goes... I'm just saying from the begining 3rd gear has been weak. Is there anything I can do to improve pull in 3rd to get me through the traps quicker? Thanks, Shane

get a works 140, a kenne bell blower, or nitrous!!!! I am sure you won't feel any lag in third gear with one of those mods LMAO!!!!!

Or you could lose sum weight on your truck..... get more mods...... Hope it gets NICE AND COOL real soon weather wise.....

I dont know what else to tell you.... unless I missed sumthing.....
Maybe a built lower end stroker package with ported heads and cams......

In my opinion the blower is laying down once the truck hits third because its running out of flow, the new blowers -Works, KB push alot more air which=more power, thats the reason that guys are making the swap. good luck, Shane

Jamie ( FOMOCOFAN) on NLOC runs them and does very well and they put him through the trap at a shade over 5200rpm, right on the edge. With your mods shane your running well, but if your spinning through first and second maybe the taller tire wil help you out, I have 28x10x16 Hoosier awaiting rims and that seems to be what most guys are running well at the track with. You may be feeling the torque converter locking up in 3rd

Sometimes it feels like it is bogging a little when it locks up.

im not feeling anything in 3rd I shouldnt. It's not like it falls on it's face in 3rd. It's just 1st and 2nd are so strong, then I get to 3rd and I feel i am in 3rd for a while... THEN I go through the traps at 107 or so... Even on the street, 1st and 2nd are awsome and 3rd pulls... It's just kinda weak. Anyone else think that? And is there anything else I can do do beef up not my top end, but 3rd gear pull.
Thanks, Shane

if I were to ever get a tranny rebuild. can I request a taller 3rd gear (or ratio)? I may not have worded that right, but if I ever put in a stall and get trans work done can I request any kind of tranny that pulls as hard in 3rd as it does in 1st? or does that have nothing to do with tranny? thanks, Shane

I have run both the MT ET streets 26" and am now running the 28" QTP's and i did not see any perfomance difference between the two. I am stuck in the 12.90's consistantly and cant get any better. Allthough w/ the mods i have now i've never ran it on a cool day its all ways been 85+ and very humid.

Your transmission gearing is also different for each gear as you go up...the gear ratio of 3rd gear is way smaller then first (2.71 to 1.00) and second (1.53 to 1.00)...third gear is a 1:1 ratio, so it will feel like it has less power then the other two.

I don't see why it wouldn't be "techincally" impossible to change your gear ratio, but you would lose top speed, etc.

Its called gear ratio and aerodynamics. 3rd is taller than second, to the torque to the wheels is lower. Less torque, less acceleation. On top of that, keep in mind that aero drag goes up with the square of speed (V^2), and you drive a vehicle with a giant cross section, and you just can't accelerate in 3rd like you can in 1st and second.

thank you for the info. What you said I will keep in mind if I ever do tranny work. I am not worried about losing much top speed past 3rd gear. I dont go much faster (on the street) than what I do in the 1/4. But on the other hand, it isnt a stricktly race truck. I was just wondering if there was any few mods I could do if not mods, then tranny work to increase the pull in 3rd gear... Thanks for the info. Shane
