Just got back from the dyno

Just got home from dynoing the 03 Lightning at Apex Motorsports. Couldn't do any tuning as the local guy doesn't have the software and doesn't want to buy it at this time. So I went down there for some numbers and an A/F reading so I can ship the chip back to Sal for adjustments.

Mods are a Swanson air filter kit, 6# lower, and PSP 4way chip, colder plugs, and 160 degree thermostat. Exhaust is completely stock. Didn't do any icing of the manifold, just drove 2 hours there, hooked it up and made two pulls; first pull (race side) made 413 rwhp and 527 rwtq. Immediately did a second pull on the 91 octane street program and made 388 rwhp and 498 rwtq. Part of the loss is heat soak.

The A/F on the race side was very rich on the top end, starting at 12.5:1 at 4200 rpm and dropping to low 10's by 5200 rpm. The street side A/F stayed right at low 11's from 4200 up.

Sounds like the truck is running great and making nice power. We can lean it more on the race side if it's going that rich. The street program sounds perfect, I usually try to tune for about 11.3 on CA gas street programs. If you want to tweak it some, just send it in with either the graphs, or the actual dynojet files on a floppy.

I'll be sending it for tweaking (race side) as I need all the trans mods taken out for my Factory Tech valve body install. Also I need you to remove the 1-2 shift shutoff problem I'm having. I think you said you found another rev limiter in there.

Why didn,t you have Danny tweek it since it already was on the dyno? Sal and Danny both tune with Autologic software. Not trying to start anything, just wondering. Heat soak kills our trucks. Skip

Danny's in Southern California; I'm in Northern California. I called him about it but it's a 15 hour round trip and I just didn't feel like it.

I just re-read it again and maybe you meant why don't I send the A/F and dyno info to him for tweeking instead of Sal. I started with Sal so I'd like to stick with him. I also got a couple of e-mails when I was posting about finding a local tuner; these guys claimed Danny's tune killed their engines. I don't really believe that, but the guy who dynoed the truck said virtually every tuner he's seen runs them too lean except for Sal and Byron.

I am sorry. I didn't read it right. I thought that you were at Danny's shop. Maybe I should have paid attention in school, instead of reading Hot Rod Magazine. Skip

Jody,
are you running 91 octane on your race side as well? Kinda sounds like it since you just drove there and hooked it up...

No, I'm running some Xylene from my buddy one post above! I mix in 4-5 gallons per tank and run the race side virtually all the time. The second set of numbers is on the 91 octane side.

4-5 gallons per tank? Are you sure you need that much? Are you adding any additional lubrication to the fuel?

I would also suggest toluene instead of xylene because of the way it burns.

Nice numbers .

4-5 gallons mixed with what's left in the tank plus our California 91 octane gets me at 97-98 octane which is what Sals race side requires. However, I've towed my car and trailer recently on the race side and even when accelerating fairly hard there was no evidence of detonation so I probably don't need to mix quite that much in. His street side works fine on 91 octane.

I'd heard that Toluene burns better (after I bought the Xylene), but has slightly lower octane. That will be my next drum.

I feel for you guys on CA gas. We can only get 92 here in KC but at least it is good 92. Most people don't know that gasoline by spec can contain anywhere between ~30-50% toluene anyway. I put in a couple of ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil for lubrication purposes also.
