How do you cancel an extended warranty?

I bought an extended warranty with the idea that I can cancel it before my 3/36 runs out and get my money back.

Since I am modding the truck I want my money back. How do I cancel it?

Bought the truck 3/03 so its only been 3 months.

Just call the dealership where you bought it, and tell them you want to cancel, or the company that supplied the extended warranty. But you won't get all your money back. They'll prorate...

according to mileage. If the truck hasn't been serviced or to the dealer yet you can tell them whatever mileage you want as they don't inspect the truck. For instance if you have 5000 miles on it they'll keep 6.7% of whatever you paid for the extended warranty 5000 is 6.7% of a 75000 mile warranty).

Isn't that called fraud? And then people complain about the cost of extended warranties and warranty denials

Fraud, shmaud. :o

I did the same thing on my old car. If you never used the extended warranty, what's the difference?

FYI, there was also a small cancellation fee, so I didn't exactly get the prorated amount, but close to it.

Sorry I just gotta take the cheap shot here...

To answer your specific question, You could try looking at the service manager crosseyed. If that does'nt work? You could try insulting him/her. If that does'nt work? Slap on a 8# lower that's been painted red and along with a chip that has a neon sign pointing to it's location.

THAT ought to do the trick w/no more worries about that pesky warrenty.

Al,

I guess it is, but like the others I figured it's an extended warranty, not a longer replacement warranty. Don't see how it hurt them as I hadn't used it at all, regular warranty or otherwise. I found out the hard way how they do it and lost $600 for being honest. They had no idea what the mileage on my truck was, and this particular one had much higher than normal miles which really hurt me. Still under the 36000 mile part of the factory warranty though.

I didn't even attempt to buy an extended warranty on this one as I knew I'd be modding it immediately.

By the way, the Xylene works great. Might try Toluene next time though.

A warranty is nothing more then an insurance policy. It is known as “pooling” money together to pay for others misfortune. In other words say 10 people pay $100 and 2 people have to use the warranty at a cost of $400 a piece that money comes from the $1,000 paid into the warranty.

The warranty or business writing the insurance policy will price the warranty according to what they expect to “have” to pay out based on history and a profit margin. If history shows that a percentage of people “fraud” them out of their money, that is ok by them, they just add that cost to all the others who buy the policy.

The warranty/insurance company is GOING to make their profit margin one way or the other, either charging everyone less because they are all honest, or charging the others more for the few CHEATS they come across.

The old saying is true ”Nothing is free"

The reason you don't get all your money back (or prorated) is you are using it from day ONE. The extended warranties start at 0 miles and the day you bought the truck not when the orignal factory warranty ends.

When I cancelled mine, it was NOT pro-rated. They tried to but I argued that the extended warranty had not been touched since I'm still running on the 3/36 from Ford. They backed off and simply charged me a small cancellation fee.

I figured the only extended warranty I'll need is a built motor and trans

Hey Jody,

Just poking a little fun at you. Glad to hear the Xylene worked good for you. Let me know when you need anymore or if you want to try Toluene. I think we're down to only 30,000 gallons.

I've never been a fan of extended warranties, as usually they are just a money maker for the dealership and the odds are in your favor that you won't ever use it. I think people get shocked when they find out that there 5 year warranty actually started on the day they purchased it. Some dealers are great at forgetting to point that out to you. Have a cold one on me.

Just for the record I think the way extended warranties work SUCK. In my opinion it should NOT start until the factory warranty is over.

I have cancled two extended warrenty's with ford now from two different cars and both time no matter the mileage they have given us back the full ammount that we paid for it. Maybe I'm just lucky?

Left a message for the person that deals with this at the dealer. I will let you know what they say tomorrow.

I was told I could cancel it and get my money back, if they try to prorate it I'll get the fianance manager on that told me this and scream.
