Just put 5w40 synthetic in...is this an "okay" decision?

doesnt sound wise to me since the motor is desinged for 5/20 to achieve proper oil presure.

If the motor was designed for 5/20 why did Ford specify 5/30 for the first few years the engine was out?

I just drained the original and put in 5 w 30. My understanding was the 5 30 was best for new engines. 250 miles on my L

My '03 Lightning has almost 500 miles on it. This is when I'll be doing the first oil change. It's getting Mobil 1, 10w30. My '97 Cobra has been running full synthetic 10w30 since it had about 1000 miles on it. It now has 35,000. When the modulars first came out they were using 5W30. I also live in a very hot climate where the 10W30 is good all year round. The 5w20 that Ford now recommends is a semi-synthetic oil. I haven't found it in full synthetic yet. I think this is Ford's way of trying to persuade you to use their oil.

My '03 LIGHTNING, dealer said,5W-20 was to get better gas mileage and that nothing as changed in these engines in 13 years. It's that Ford as to meet goverment gas mileage!I'v been useing 10W-30 oil year round. With NO PROBLEMS!

I thought our owner's manuals called for 5W20? Maybe it's the '01s only. Anyway, Mobil 1 doesn't make 5W20 in synthetic, but they do make 0W20 in full synthetic and it states on the label that it meets Ford's 0W20 specs. I live in the hot weather here in Texas and have had no problems so far using it. No crazy noises at start up or any other time. Just another grade to consider.
