My alternator took a crapper today(only 23,000 miles). What timing. I leave tomorrow for Virginia.

My dealer will have one tomorrow at 11 a.m.

So I will be taking mine out tonight so I do not have to pay a core charge.

any tips?

Shaun @JDM told me the top bolts are 8 mm and the bottom are 10 mm and that the bottom ones do not have to come out all the way(Kinda like headers).

Anything else.

I took mine out and had no problems.
It's really crammed in there, so alot of other stuff will need to come off the engine. For one the Idler Barcket will have to be removed, this is why I polished mine and repacked the bearing because I found it was fairly easy to remove.

Here is what I did for others that want to do this:

Make sure truck is cooled down!
1) Disconnect Battery
2) Unplug wire harness to alternator
3) Disconnect Radiator Hose (Will make a mess unless you drain some fluid)
4) Remove black bracket from above Alternator
5) Remove Idler bracket
6) Alternator can now be removed

 

I understand you are very modified and all and don't wanna sound like a dummy, but shouldn't the alternator be covered under warranty>??? I don't think it would be hard to sawp just time consuming. Goodluck. Have a safe trip to Va. -Mat-

More than likely not because mods like an electric fan and aftermarket amps will put a heavy extra load on an alternator. Dealers will quickly point this out and charge you well over $200 for a new one. Upgrade in the future or your stock 130amp will continue to take a crap on you. Since I switched to a 200amp, my electric fan has worked alot better and has had a noticable change in how the engine reacts when the fan turns on. Good Luck!

For everybody else. I do not even drive by a dealer without worrying much less use my warranty.

It could be covered but I do not have the time(leaving tomorrow for Virginia) or patience to argue about it.

No matter anyway.

I will be paying my L off this week and cancelling my extended warranty anyway.

vinnie I didnt mean to steal your thread. I see you are doing it yourself and your buying a new one tomorrow and installing it yourself 2. While you were on the topic, i just thought I'd ask...I've just always been curious. If your truck stock, is the Alternator covered under warranty?

No sweat. I do not know if it is covered. Believe me , that $200 hurt. Was not expecting the alternator to go so quickly.

Pete(captainoblivious) came over and we got it out no problem. I will pick the new one up tomorrow morning and put it in. then its off to Virginia.
