Question Used Lightnings

I don’t know why my other thread was closed but oh well.

Good news today,

I found a local Ford Dealer (128 Ford) that has three used L’s. Two are 2000’s and the other is unknown. I was not able to get colors or mileage but I know that one of them is listed at $19,950. I’m going to swing by the dealer tomorrow night and check them out.

Can some of you guys do me another favor and give me a few quick pointers on what to look for as far as potential problem areas. After reading L threads for a couple years I know the basics but not the fine points. As far as I can remember these are the problem areas for a stock L:

Intercooler leaks
Blowing out spark plugs
Something to do with the steering

Thanks,

Pete

I would ask the dealer to check and show proof that it never had a chip also. If it has any warranty left, having a chip in it previously could be a waranty killer. Plus it also shows that it may have been used harder and can be used to negotiate the price down. Good luck in your purchase

Thanks for the help,

How would they be able to prove that it was never chipped?

I just found out that I may be able to get a deal on one of these L's through a friend who knows the general sales manager at the dealer!

I'll try and get some VIN's tomorrow night, thanks.

When I test drive one I like is there something that may sound weird if something is wrong? I know they whine like hell but is there anything else to be looking for on a test drive? How should the transmission shifts feel? What should the brakes feel like? I have a regular F-150 and that thing doesn't stop for ****e so I have nothing to compare it to.

Man I will be so damn happy if I can get an L, I have wanted one since the Gen I's came out. Every time I see one on the street I just stare in awe.

Gotta love a truck that can smoke a mustang or camaro.

I bought my black '00 about 2 months ago... I paid $19 for it, but it had high mileage (58k, but stock and totally clean), just to give you a comparison... but it was going to be 19k take it or leave it, i prearranged the loan and was NOT going to hassle with any damned car dealer *****

being the first full size truck I've had, I was like when I tried to brake with it like my previous car, 96 pontiac firebird. that beater had farking drum brakes in the back and cheesy discs in the front, and it still stopped like 10x better than my L, I'm still getting used to braking with the high weight increase.

look under the truck for anything fishy, check the rear end for leaks

Looking for a used Lightning
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone knew of any used Lightning’s for sale in the Southern Massachusetts area for $20k or less. I am looking for a stock truck and would need it to be sold from a dealer so I could trade in my truck.
Doug

128 Ford didn't want to deal at all when I was looking for an L. I drove to Quincy to get mine.

Check for mods...I wouldn't buy a modded Lightning unless it was built to the hilt.

In addition to carfax, I'd

run the VIN through dealers computer to see service/warranty history to spot any prob's! Good luck!

I have to work late tonight so I am going to the dealer tomorrow morning to check out a Black 2000 L with about 10k miles on it. It’s supposed to be in mint condition. They want $29,995 for it as a sale price so I don’t know if they will be willing to lower the price much. Does that price sound about right?

I guess it will depend on what they are willing to give me for my truck, https://www.f150online.com/galleries...ew.cfm?num=354

I would like to get at least & $15k for my truck but I don’t know if they will go for it, I won’t trade it for less than $14k.

Hopefully all will go well and I’ll finally own an L………..that would be sweeeeeet.

Thanks again,

Pete

That price is WAY TOO HIGH for a used 2000 L. Some dealers are selling brand new 2003 Lightnings for that price. THat dealer is in that truck (meaning what they paid at an auction or trade in + smog and safety) probably for no more than $ 18.000 - $20.000. Some big dealers are able to buy Lightnings for $4 - $6000 below wholesale. Sell your truck on your own, or else they will rape you. They will most likely offer you $10.000 for your truck. I am sorry, but I think that you will be very disappointed at that dealer!

IMO, 19,995 is a pretty good price if it really has only 10K miles.

I bought mine in January,
it's a '99 and it had 3000 miles on it. I paid $17,000 for it.
As it sits right now it has 10,000 miles on it. and I am going to sell it at the end of summer for $19,000
