I have a Helmet Question?

I have a helmet question please. I have a DOT SE – 10 helmet is that good enough for NHRA and NMRA Drag Racing events?
If not what is?

Must be Snell 95 or newer. I believe they will accept either the SA rating or the MA.

Snell standards are much higher than DOT. Most sanctioning bodies (SCCA, NHRA, FIA, etc) do not recognize a DOT rating.

Personally I would go with an SA rated helmet.

SA are built for car crashes
MA are built for motorcycle crashes

There is a difference between the 2, so go with what you are doing. And DON'T put a price tag on a helmet.

As captainoblivious stated do NOT put a price tag on a helmet. If your worried about price then you should NOT be racing. We had a guy when I use to race modifieds and pro-stocks use a cheap DOT helmet (to save a few bucks) he don't drive no more because he saved $100 or so on a helmet. He don't drive because he DIED of massive head injuries in a roll over on the track.

I believe in one of the differences between MA/SA rating and Dot rating is the MA/SA have Nomex lining for fire.

I race bikes with a $100 helmet, well it's $250 but it was on sale. As long it's the latest SNELL it's good.
My old Snell 95 helment is no good anymore and wouldn't pass tech inspection at the track.

And let me give you some advice. Don't try to buy a helmet on-line. You will have no idea whether if will fit you or not. There is little consistency between mfgr's size ratings. One mfgr's SM may be another's S or another's M. Also, people have very different head shapes, so go to a store that stocks several brands and pick the one that fits YOU best, not necessarily the most expensive or the one with the most bling. I tried on a bunch and wound up buying a cheap (if you can call $150 cheap) HJS because it was far more comfortable than the others. Good luck in your search.

SA helmets have a Nomex,Proban, or Kevlar liner for fire protection. MA helmets do not. That is the only difference in the ratings. Typically a SA rated helmet will cost $100-$150 more than the identical MA rated helmet. Try before you buy. The higher quality helmets tend to be sold by a numbered size (7, 7-1/4, 7-1/2, etc) the lower quality usually go by S, M, L, XL, etc. Buy a name brand (Simpson, Bell, Arai, etc).

Sometimes you have no choice. But you can find a another version of the helmet and order the correct one online.

But make sure it's returnable just in case.
