Not the clunk, but what tha?

ok, i've searched and read and searched about the clunk but i don't think this is what i have. I've gotten under the truck and no movement on the "clunk" bolt and washer. Can't see where it's moved even a hair. And really i banged around a looked all over and i can't see where anything is moving around that would make such a noise.

The sound is a clunk/clank/pop noise. seems to be coming from the bed, sounds almost like a rock or something in the bed hitting the side when you turn (without any rolling noise, just the pop), does it worst when turning left, and sometimes to the right. never really does it in straight ahead path, but i think i've noticed it when braking real hard a time or two. Nothing on Acceleration.

what do i do, just give in and take to the slow as he** dealership?

Umm, maybe a loose tailgate or something? Have you opened it and moved it around? I Know mine is squeaky I found this out by getting so mad, at a stop light, I got out, pushed down on the back right part, and heard squeaking. I then opened the tailgate becasue it sounded like it was coming from in there... sure enough. Its the support strap I think. The bolt is a little loose.

its definitly not the tailgate, and by the way, if your tail gate makes the chirp sound when you go over bumps and such, spray some duralube in the 2 pivot joints at the bottom, open and close the tail gate a few times, and then you wont have to do it for a year or so. Both my flareside trucks did that, 1st thing I did to the L when I got it

the steering stops on make noise on really sharp slow turns...its more of a metal on metal grinding sound...sorta sounds like something stretching, but the grease will fix it for sure...mine made that noise as well..... Before I knew what it was I was going to change my screen name to "Squeeky SVT" because it happend so often

well, it's not really squeeky by any means, it's got a pretty good pop to it sometimes. i've rattled around under there a bit and tried to wiggle everything didn't notice shock being lose either. didn't notice where any washers or bolts had moved. Haven't messed with the tailgate really, didn't sound like that would be it, but i'll try.....

i've tried and tried to listen to it....makes for some boring rides with the radio off. Can't really tell over the exhaust noise when going, but i vaguely here a close sound when going over rough spots in the road. it's just real prominent when stopped and turning

thats sounding more and more like a loose shock, you wont notice how loose it is untill you take the truck's weight off of it... jack that sucker up and take a serious look at all of them

well, good saturday project. i'll get up under there and check out the shocks....makes sense that would be it the way it acts and when it pops, but we'll see.

wildneg: I've been real tempted to get out at a light to kick a tire and mutter something mean as loud as i can and i've almost stopped in the middle of a turn to back up and pull forward to see if i could get it to keep doing it and find out what it was......it's agravating especially when like i've heard others say, when your pulling into a parking spot somewhere and people are checking you out...then all of the sudden " POP/CLANK"

You know mine doe’s the same thing (Silver 2001), mostly when turning (either way) or a hard strait stop. After checking everything twice, I discover what was making the noise was the ABS system. I had to try the 18 second testament “0 to 100 to 0”, strait out of the dealer about 10 miles on it, did this to everybody, gave it gas and stomp on the brakes! Shortly thereafter the popping grinding all kinds of noise started then I took it to the dealer, and they said it is normal. Anyway the noise will get more frequent as the tires wear, and will occur less with new front tires.

Ok this thing is getting worse and driving me crazy, i've checked all i can see, but it's now gotten to where it does it on straight path sometimes, and every time i turn either way, and if you turn slow enough it does have a squeek/creak sound, and on fast turn a pop. i stood on back bumper and jumped weight from side to side and it poped and creaked something fierce....sounds like something needs greased but what!!!???

Dealer sux...the guy earked me just talking to him...plus they were backed up supposedly

on top of all of that trying figure out this noise i noticed my bed and cab are not aligned, there is about a quarter to half inch differenc in the gap between bed and cab on each side of the truck. on passenger side the two ground effects are almost touching, on driver side there's about half inch seperation.

I think ive heard of this problem. i thought it was a transmission issue that ford declared as "unfixable until further notice" as in, they dont know what it is but once they do theyll fix it. I dont know if that is this paticular problem, but you might want to search it up to see if you find anything. Im not positive, but its a lead you might wanna check.

Oh wait, by saying not the "clunk" do you mean not this transmission clunk. i thought that was a clank, but theres a clunk too. Clank can be fixed, theres somethign wrong, but clunk was something else, its in the 4r70w's too i think.

grease the steering stops, mine did the same thing at 1000 miles and drove me crazy, the dealer took care of it in 5 minutes and nothing since.
