Newbie introduction, and one question..

I am new to this board, and was told this was the place to be since I bought a lightning on Fri. I bought an 02, stock with 17k on it.

I got the lightning as my daily, and once my other car is up and running again I will probably start modding the Lightning as well.

I am completely new to modding domestics as I have always modded imports. My other car is a single turbo Lexus SC300. It has ended up getting a little over the top, and that is why I got the L... reliable daily, something to mod a bit, and to tow the Lexus.

I don't know why you would but if you ever have any Supra/Lexus/RX7 questions let me know, and I will try and help

The one question I have is is anyone making 500 RWHP/500 RWTQ on pump gas in this truck yet? That is my goal and I am just curious to see how people are getting there.

Typical "clubs" are like:

-400/500
-450/550
-500/600
-550/650
-600/700

Noone makes even hp/tq........so if 500hp is what you want........yes there are people who are making 500/600 on pump gas. But it is not cheap to do

Well, how do I get there?

The Lexus recipe was Speed Pro, SP88, Turbo 400 trans, 200 spool up shot, built motor, etc., etc. so I am not opposed to some expense (982 RWHP, 750 RWTQ)

The main thing is I want it to be reliable on pump gas in this trim, so is this possible, and does the tranny crap on itself when you do this?

For reliability, you'll want to get a built motor for that kind of power. A stock motor can take 500/600, but only for so long.

Here is a quick run down of parts you'll need to acomplish that goal (parts and prices pulled from Power Surge Performance (PSP)):

$1875 - Complete PSP Lower End Package
$ 999 - Complete PSP/NX Nitrous Package (150 Shot)
$ 700 - Bassani Cat Back Exhaust
$ 565 - Bassani High Flow Cats
$ 425 - PSP 4-Program Autologic Chip
$ 279 - Truck - Tracks Traction Bars
$ 260 - PSP 6Lb Lower Pulley w/ Belt & Tool Kit
$ 200 - PSP Fresh Air System Technology Air System
$ 179 - Lightning High Flow Filter Kits
$ 70 - PSP Gen 2 Drive Shaft Loop
----------------------------
$5643

That will get you into the 11's consistantly and reliably with a set of slicks. BUT! You will still need to get the transmission harden. This could be something simple from a Vavle Body, or may need to the entire thing re-built. There are still other things that you could do like electric fans, electric water pump, Cams, Single Blade T/B, Bigger heat exchanger and so forth.

Other good tuners for the Lightning/Harley/Cobra are JLP, JDM, and REM.

It's all up to you and how much your willing to spend... But remember, you will have to pay to play.

Yup, you gotta get used to these things. We don't have equal HP and torque.

If you want powerfull and reliable you are going to have to a get a build block to help prevent turning it into swiss cheese.

But for power adders, get a KB blower and chip and be done with it. If I ever got another L, that would be the route I would take.

Don't forget labor, unless you have the knowledge and patience to build a modular motor yourself. A built shortblock alone will cost 3500-4000 dollars.

As for your Lexus, got any pics? And an entire list of mods? Sounds like quite a car....

Thanks for the replies guys... I don't really want to spray this truck, as I am not a big fan of spraying much more than a 50-75 shot on pump gas, and even then I really prefer 100 or 104.

With a built motor will the KB blower really produce these kinds of numbers on 93 octane?

As far as the lex goes, here is a list of mods:

Fully Race Ported Head
Custom Tubular Turbo Manifold
Custom SP Intake Manifold
Custom 3.5" Turbo Back Exhaust
Custom Larger Diameter Head Studs
Custom Washers and Nuts
Custom Twin Entry Fuel Rail
160 lbs/hr injectors (roughly 1600+cc)
Twin Walbro 255 LPH In Tank Pumps

Custom underground crank with clevite bearings
Supra TT 6 Speed LSD Rear End
Custom Driveshaft
SP400 3 speed manual valve body transmission upgrade

Custom NHRA Certified Chromoly Roll Cage (through the dash, not around it)
Greddy 3 Row Front Mount Intercooler
HKS GT 60mm Wastegate
SP88 Turbo (based on a PTE88)
Custom Direct port dry 200 shot nitrous setup
Supra TT brake upgrade (front and rear)

I like the nitrous because it's extra power on demand for the track and not something you'll have to deal with every day. but also with the four program chip, you can have a conserative nitrous program to run a larger shot and be able to run pump gas, all the while makeing big power (though not as big as you could if you were on race gas). And since the pushing the stock Eaton blower anything 6Lbs of boost over stock createing obsessive heat; the only other route would be the KB Blower. But you'll still need to have the transmission hardened and a built motor.

Shoot me an e-mail with the pictures and ill get then hosted for ya.

I'm pretty sure these were with 93. I may of put in some C16, but I don't think so. If I did it wasn't needed. I have run 22psi(2.5" upper and 2lb lower) with the chip(JL diablo) I used on these dyno runs with the timing at 14°(street side) on 93 octane with no problems.

Ebanks,

I thought I recognized you from somewhere! I've been on supraforums for years but never really posted much. Welcome to the board, I'm new here myself. I remember when you first started the SC300 project, good to see that it turned out well (maybe a little too well haha). Good luck with the Lightning!

Welcome Ethan. I recognized your name from ClubLexus. I'm sure you will be modding the truck out before long.

Ethan,

Recognize your name from way back when on the forums.

The car you've been building with SP is going to be a beast without a doubt. Too bad it's not in the body of an MKIV

Other than some reminiscing, I can't be of too much help.

It seems like you've tried it all in the import world, RX-7s, Supras, NSX's, and more, but the Lightning is definately a different ball game.

I have an 01 L as my daily driver and tow vehicle for my lowly BPU 6-speed (for now)l. It's pretty stock at the moment but hasn't given me any real problems.

A few more rattles here and there then your average Toyota, but other than that, it's been mechanically sound for 30K miles.

Good luck...theres plenty of advice to be had on this forum.
