L awd conversion?

Has anyone tried this? Pardon my ignorance, but would it be reasonable to assume that one could get an Explorer donor awd and mod the L to accept it?

Anyone have any idea on what the pros and cons of such thinking would be? Pitfalls? Is it even realistic?

AWD is something I'm very interested in (along with automatic height adjustment--yes, I just the thing on the Cayenne again and I dig it...)

Thanks,
Rip

It is realistic if you have lots of money. It would be easier IMO to start with a 4x4 F150 and then stick a D1SC on it with a built engine.

i thought i read in MM&FF that some one did that. he took a 4X4 F-150 and made it look exactly like a LIghtning and perform like one too. it also had a 5-spd if i remember correctly

What would be the purpose of you doing that? Drag racing?

To me, I wouldn't think it would be worth the $$$$ that it would cost to turn a Lightning into a 4x4, but a 4x4 into a Lightning would be better.

Improved traction mostly--both on pavement and off . Plus, I like the fact that the L is a truck, and though I'm not interested in offroading or rockcrawling, I like the idea of being able to use is as a truck a bit more (I'm not always in the city proper).

It's mostly an academic kinda question, I suppose, but I am interested in getting a better idea of what it would take to do this with the L without paying too much of a penalty in weight or performance (if any). Plus, I don't think anyone else has done it yet.

Thx.

I recognize an increased weight factor, but any idea how much? Everything's a tradeoff...

I did a transmission for one once, you need to get the Navigator front end and you'll need a transmission which I can build either stock Lightning or a Monster Box. A regualr Navigator tranny won't take it, you'll need either a L tranny converted to 4WD or a Monster Box set up for it. You also need to get a PCM made for the AWD, not usre how hard that is to do, but it's doable.

Thanks, Greg. I'll e-mail you separately--hopefully you have some contact information for this guy and would do me a favor and ask him to contact me. I'd like to see how he did it and if he found it worthwhile.

I appreciate your reply.

I am sure Quigley in PA could handle it. They convert E-series vans all day long. I would think it would be very neat. -Mat-

For this year's SEMA show, Ford will have a pretty cool Blown Navi made, I think it's gonna be on the cover of Motor Trend, you might want to check it out, too. I'd tell you some of the details, but then I'd have to Kill you.
