i need the best hooking slicks available what sizes and what rims????
hey everyone, well im trying to get some of this r and d outta the way first off before i hit the track and i was wondering everyones opinions on what is the best hooking tires for a high horsepower truck. i currently have the hoosier 28 x 10 x 16's. but i know they will not hook up this power. first off im taking the 4.10s out and im sticking the 3.55s back in so im thinking maybe a 28 or 29 x 12.5x 15. opinions needed please. by the way im only interested in full race slicks no et streets or nothing else. thanks
you have a few choices in slicks
It all depends on the track prep where you race
if the track is very well treated and consistantly hooks very good go for the radial slicks 30.0/10.5-15 Radial part #18215 On a realy good hooking track these would be the tire of choice, but if you go up in smoke off the line you might as well forgett that run.
If your track isn't treated as well or isn't as consistant go for the
30.0/10.5-15 part #18205 these have a softer compound and will hook better on a iffy track. The advantage is these hook a lot better, but on a real good track the radials will be a little faster. With these tires if you spin the tires off the line you would have a cjance of pedalling and saving a decent run. One little thing to keep in mind these tires have a wider sidewall compaired to the radials, so if you are lowered you may want to check wheel well clearances.
There are a few choices in the 29" tall tire too
29.0/11.0-15 part #18180 or 29.0/10.5-15 W* part#18175 I don't know a lot about these two tires excect they have the same soft D05 compund as the non radial 30" tall tires.
When I spoke to the Hoosier engineer and told him what I wanted to do, he recomended the Non radial slick. Since I travel to different tracks and cant allways count on a great hooking track we decided the non radials would be better. Also since I am not used to all the power my truck now makes I decided to go foa a more consistant tire even though I might give up a little ET and mph.
So it all depends on where you would be racing and how well they treat your track. Alsdo since you have 4:10 gears the 30" tires might be a better choice. I know JDM tested a set of 4:10's and they actually lost a little ET and Mph. The taller tires may help get the most ET and mph out of your setup.
One word of warning the 15" slicks do require a good amount of modification to the rear brakes. I know you deal with JL so maybee you should talk to him about what is required in modifying the rear brakes. I went with a narrower offset rim compaired to what most people are running, and mine required even a little more radical modification over the normal offset everyone else is running.
Hope that helps.
Hey here is a little hint, there may be someone in the carolinas that has a set of nice 15" rims and 30" slicks for sale. Many of you will know what I am talking about, hehe.

hey don, thanks for the info. what tires did you go with and what gears do you have. i was thinking of the 30s and leaving 4.10s in but i just dont think thats gonna be the right gear i believe id be out of gear. i already have the 3.55s and if i went to a 30 inch with them how bad do you think it would hurt me. im thinking i need to trade someone my 4.10s for their 3.73s hahaha... i believe 3.73s and 30s would be nice. opinions? by the way what wheels have the best fit i really do not like the bogarts price. i think i remember hearing sal say bogarts fit the worst out of the 4 wheels he tried. i want the wheel that will require the least amount of modification. by the way how do you modify them just grind it with a hand held grinder. thanks again for the info.
Hey Don, can you be a little more Specific as to what needs to be done to get a 15 inch wheel over our stock brakes. Are we talking about just grinding the calipers to clear or is it even more than that ? Also what is your offset ? What do others run ? If you dont mind why did you go different offset than others ?
Thanks
Thanks
