First gear traction in a Lightning
First gear traction in a Lightning
I have an 03 with a 6# lower, 4-way PSP chip, and Swanson cone filter. I also swapped plugs and thermostat (160 degree) as per PSP.
I've driven a friends 2000 Lightning with 4# lower, chip, and JL air box; other than that it is completely stock. When I drove it anywhere in first gear at full throttle spins the tires. If you downshift to first they spin until it shifts into second gear. He runs the factory tires and wheels and they appear to be in good condition.
My 03 with the mods will not spin the tires in first gear on a downshift or a roll-out on the 91 octane program. From a dead stop it will spin them but if you're moving even 5 mph and floor it they don't spin. I bought some xylene and switched to the race (98 octane) program. Now in first it spins them a little bit but not through the gear, and rarely if ever spins them on a downshift to first.
Now I know traction is a good thing. But I'm just curious if this is how other trucks are. I have a dyno/chip tune this Wednesday. I'm hoping they find that the timing is conservative and the A/F is super rich!
I know part of it is because my last project made over 1000 HP so it makes other vehicles feel sluggish. I'll have more answers Wednesday when I see the tune and dyno numbers; I was just curious if this seems normal to you guys or not.

How's his tread?? I have a buddy with a Gen 3 Camaro RS with the weak-a$$ 305 engine in it, and since his rear tires are approaching tread-life of slicks, his car will spin the tires in 2nd right about now...............and trust me, it's not the power the car has, cause I don't think it runs any better than a high 15 sec. 1/4 mile
