Some NHRA tracks require a Snell approved helmet, others just require a DOT approved helmet but I think it really depends on how fast you run. I don't have my rulebook here with me though.

I believe it is a Snell 2000. Not positive though.

Actually I think Snell 90 or newer sticks in my head. Snell 2000 may be for bikes or ATV's.

For SCCA, it's SNELL 90 or better (2000 is an upgraded spec)

The only drag strip I've ever run required a helmet when you hit the 13's.

M2000 is the current motorcycle spec. SA2000 is the current automobile spec (additional tests for fireproofing). From G-Force:

"Snell SA2000 - M2000. Our customerss have asked what the difference is between a Snell SA2000 and M2000 certification for a helmet. All Snell tests for these specifications include multiple impact tests at -20 degrees, 78 degrees (dry and wet) and 120 degrees. The Snell M2000 specification is the base for the specs. The SA2000 - used primarily for auto racing - adds not only the thicker shield, but also the use of flame retardant paint, trim, retention strap and interior. The Snell SA2000 helmet also meets an additional rollbar impact test."

do they actually check to see if it's snell approved, and how can they tell other than the little stickers on the back?

Depends on where you race. But remember, "Snell 2000" tells you nothing. Make sure its Snell SA2000. Some sanctioning bodies will not allow M2000 helmets.
